Hi to all,

PLEASE HELP....... my little girl has been off her food for the last week, and i am beginning to get concerned. As she loves her food and has never refused to eat what is given to her. She has now caught a vomititng bug also and will not eat a single thing. Everything i try she gags and vomits it.

Now i give her some soup, fruit and liquid(electrolytes) to keep her minerals and salt up. Does anyone have any other suggestions, i would be extremly gratefull.
Also does giving her electrolytes have any affect on her having CF.

Thanks
Eli

Hope everything goes well for you and your daughter.

Electrolytes as far as I know are a good way to replace the salt that a CFer loses.

If she has caught a gastro bug (causing her to vomit) then there would be no point trying to get her to eat much until it passes (I recently had one that went for 5 days and couldn't even look at food) however it has been a week and you should see the doctor about it. In the meantime keeping up her fluids is essential.

I hope she gets better real soon.

I was diagnosed when I was 8 and how they actually found out was because I had a bowel obstruction. Everything I ate OR drank (even just a glass of water), I threw up. This went on for days before they finally realized there might be a serious problem (ahh, living in the country!). I was also in horrible pain and this made me not want to eat anything, along with the constant vomitting. Anyways, I think the best bet would be to take your child to the doctor to make sure nothing serious is going on. And something just popped into my head that might actually work (if it is just a fear of eating and nothing physical). When I was back on the farm, we fed calves with a bottle, and whenever they wouldn't drink, we would gently rub the area under their chins (just back and forth, not circular or anything) and this always made them drink. Always. Now I realize a child is a long way from a cow, but it's worth a try. Best of luck to you,

Rose - 23 with CF.

Hi,

If your daughter has had this for a week most likely it isn't a stomache virus, they don't usually last that long. I would take her to the doctor. It is good that she is holding down soup and fluids, that is most important above all. It is a good idea to give her electoylte drinks, mostly Pedialyte. If she is acting listless, or doesn't look right, I would bring her to emergency. or at the very least a doctor. Children that young dehydrate very rapidly. Make sure she has several wet diapers a day, that will help you to know if she is dehyrdrated or not.

Hope she feels better soon,

Jennifer

Eli, definately replace her electrolyte levels. CFers loose more electrolytes than those without, and during a time of sickness this can be crucial for her.

As far as food, maybe try liquids like you have been doing. She might tolerate that better that solids if she's got a flu bug. I know when I have the flu I don't want to look at food but for a CFrer it's crucial to eat. If she keeps on like this, Iwould take her to the doctor.

Stay strong!

Hello, is she having frequent bowel movements? When my son was backed up he would not eat and was throwing up (but not for more than a day.) I would say a trip to the md is in order. Good luck. Paula

Thanks everyone for your replies,

For the moment she has stopped vomiting, but is still not herself. She seems physically unwell, its goog timing though because she has an appoint with her peadiatrician today(it is so hard to get an appoint with him).

AS for her bowel motions she has done 1-2 a day as opposed to 3-4, which isn't concerning to me as yet.She has also had very smelly (poos), which seems odd, because she is only on liquid electrolytes (Pedialyte), soup and fruit.

Oh... and she had some milk in the morning, and didn't throw it up(thank god).
I know you shouldn't give them milk when they have an upset tummy, but she demanded it.

Anyway, we will see what the doc has to say, i will let you know!
Thanks again
Eli

DS got a bug when he was about a year old -- started with him not eating much, then vomiting, then the runs. Pretty much just gave him pedialyte for several days -- put him in bed between us so in the middle of the night I could give him a bottle with some pedialyte. The also have pedialyte freezy pops btw. It took him about a week to totally get over it. Every time I thought he could maybe eat something, he'd vomit -- usually over my shoulder. So just focus on keeping her hydrated. Does she have a fever? DS also had a fever. Was basically a run of the mill stomach virus, but at the times scared the HECK out of us 'cuz DS was born with a bowel obstruction, which required surgrery and we were afraid this was something similar. Oh, and his poos smelled really nasty, too. Kinda like chemicals -- real strong smell, but not like poo smell.
