My Cat

I thought I'd share this little story with you guys. Yesterday I went outside last night to bring my cat back in, well he happened to have a baby bird in his mouth, still alive and just chirping like crazy, so I was able to get the bird away from the cat and I brought the bird in my garage and my husband and I doctored the leg, it only had a couple of holes from where the cat had him in his mouth. Well now I have a pet bird!! Well not forever thou, when he gets better and can fly realy good, Im going to let it free. I'm paranoid about getting something from this cute innocent bird. After I feed him or touch him or anything of that sort I wash my hands, Im so paranoid that I was my hands three or four times before I feel they are clean enough I also put the sanitizer hand wash on too. I have the little birdy in a box sitting in my shower so the cat cant get him, we have shower doors so there is no way the cat can get it.

Jennifer,

I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND.

If you read my recent blog we took in a stray dog. We got him on Sunday, so could not get him to the vet till Monday. All Sunday and Monday we all washed our hands about 100 times, and after we got him to the vet I washed my house from top to bottom.

I figure better safe than sorry!

Its sweet you are taking care of the bird. Sounds like you are taking all the right precautions on keeping your hands clean.

My cat brought me a mouse one time. and I'm not talking a baby mouse. more like a field mouse. right inside the house and straight to my bedroom. she took him out of my room (thank goodness), but we had to get him out of the house. We got him out safely. He was a little injuried from the cat but lived to see another day.

My cat loves to catch mice, which is ok by me as long as he doesnt bring it into the house or garage, one time he brought a live mouse in the garage, I think its gone now, but he lost his previliges to the garage because of that.

Well if you want to make sure the baby bird is clean for you to touch it before you touch it, you could always use salad tongs and microwave it for a minute or two before you try and feed it.

I hate to burst your bubble but you shouldn't keep this bird. If it gets used to you feeding it and such it may not be able to survive when you let it go. It won't know where to find food. Also it may have just fallen out of the nest when your cat found it. That happens a lot but the momma bird will keep an eye on the baby. You should try taking him out to the area where you found your cat with it. Leave it there for a little while and see if mom comes for it. If not most animal shelters take in baby birds or can tell who does. Someone who has experience with this should take care of the bird so that he can go back to the wild.

My daughter/hubby found a baby bird last year that was "kicked" out of the nest. It was apparent that something happend & Momma knew to dispose of it. We took it in & "loved" it for the few days that it survived. We (hubb/I) knew it wouldnt live, but Jazz was hoping he would pull thru. We made sure to wash our hands well etc. After "Windy" which is what Jazmine named him/her died, we "buried" him/her. She did such a great job at taking care of him that she was rewarded with 2 parakeets by Daddy. Its possible that something was wrong with this bird & the Momma disposed of it since in the animal world that happens. Its possible this bird was injured etc. Its also possible that your cat is a good hunter & happen to snatch it right from the nest. Either way you know to take extra precaution with hygiene. Even if the baby wasnt suppose to be fron its Momma.....now that it had injuries from the cat (even if small) the chances of Mommy taking him back is slim.

Yea I did a search about that stuff last night on the net, and after reading all of this stuff, I think today I will let it oustside in my front yard and stay a few distances back and see what happenes, he is about ready to fly and I think his injuries are better. Eventhough the baby bird has been gone from the parents a couple of days maybe they will take him back under his wing. I just hope I didn't give him pnuemonia or anything. I read about that stuff last night and it scared me, so I might even take it to the spca or something if the parents don't come back to the baby and see what they think, but hopefully the little bird is ok, and will be able to live in the wild.

Yeah, I agree. Although it really is nice of you to take care of the bird and you have good intentions, you may be doing more harm than good.

edit Never mind, I see you already know. =-) Posted just before me, you did.

Well, once my batteries charge for my digital camera, I'll take a picture of the cute little bird, for you guys to see and maybe someone might be able to tell me what kind of bird it might be.

My cat has brought me the craziest things in the past, Live birds, live moles, a snake, a baby squirrel ( i able to free it as soon as i saw he had it) and once he tried to run in with a live screaming secada ( those big ugly scary looking locusts). I was able to get him to drop it outside and hurry him ( the cat) inside and the locust walked away. Oh the gifts we get out of love and admiration....

Jennifer,

One day I found a baby bird laying on my back porch with my cat nearby. He was so tiny. I called the local vet and they referred me to a lady that saved little birds in similar situations. I took him over there to her. The next day I run into the same woman where my mom works. She had many birds it seemed, and they called her the bird lady. From time to time I'd get updates as to how Lucky was doing, she named him. Seems two other orphan birds befriended him and started watching over him. They were all inseparable. Lucky did do good for awhile, but I think he finally passed away after many months. I didn't think he had much hope of a life when I gave him to her. But it warmed my heart that he became important to two other birds.

A little update on little birdy, he has a new home in the backyard, my husband made a little fence in my flower bed, so the bird will be outside and have room to walk and try to learn to fly, safely, the only thing that can get him would be a snake. He no longer lives in the bathtub in a box. Yay, well, we figured if he was outside with the surrounding it would help. We will continue to feed him, althought I have noticed today that he has ate a few things on his own. Monday probably Tuesday, since Monday is Memorial day the vet probably wont be open, so Tuesday I'll call them tell them what happened and see what they say.

P.s. the bateries are still charging, but as soon as they are done, I will post pic. of the old home, new home and of course the birdy, and maybe my cat that caused all this.

SAD SAD News, little birdy just died, I don't understand why, he was doing fine and probably 5 mins ago he started acting wierd when we was going to feed him, in his new cage. He acted like he was sleeping and he stopped chirping and so we gave him some water which I know isnt good to do, but we were trying to help him. Then we put him back in his old home and my husband and I started to watch tv and I went to check on him shortly and then I saw he died. I feed him breed, worms and cat food. After reading about birds last night I found that worms are bad b/c they might have parasites and breed wasn't good either, they suggested cat or dog food or mixed, so it would get the nutrients and such so we did that. I think we probably gave him pnuemonia or possibly it got a parasite. The site also said not to feed it water because it could get pnuemonia, which is why I think he might of got that. I feel like I was the cause of his death when all I was trying to do was help it. So I won't be posting any pictures, sorry guys.

I guess you can say I had HIGH hopes for this little guy to grow up and be a healthy bird.

That bird might have had internal injuries which you couldnt do anything about. Its best that he died instead of suffering! Appreciate the memories!

Just wanted to mention that the same thing happened to me last summer.. my cat had a baby bird in its mouth and i got the cat to let it go.. i called someone that rescued wild animals and they told me there was NO way the bird would live because cats saliva is lethal to birds and they need a special diet. they cant live off of water and insects... the bird ended up dieing the next day..

awww thats sad , at least you tried and kept him safe from any other harm. Chances are what Melissa said is right, he probably did have internal injuries or he may have been booted out of the nest because there was something wrong. Still sad though

Yes it was very sad, believe or not, I actually cried over the little bird. I felt so sorry for it too. I had him for two days.
