My 25 year old daughter who is 2 months pregnant just got her blood tests back today that says she is a carrier of CF. She ha sa son that is almost 6. Now what I am confused about is there has never been any mention of CF before. I have 5 children and this has never came up before, I am confused as to where this has came from. Also I have never known my father and so I am wondering if this could of came from his side? Thanks Annie

There was never any history of CF in my family before I was born, but apparently my father and mother were carriers, we found out that all my uncles are carriers, and a cousin on my moms side was a carrier, and had a daughter with CF a few years after me. Just because there is no history of CF does not mean that its not possible. You have a 25% chance of having a child with CF if both you and your partner are carriers.

We thought the doctor was nuts when he said my son had cf. I didn't think there was anything like that in the family. My dads older sister then remembered a couple of their cousins that died from cf years ago. (back then they died at ages of 8 or so.) My dad never remembered that cause he was alot younger. So I know some of his side are carriers - my husband has never traced any on his side that they know of. If her husband test negative then you don't have to worry!

You should also maybe get her son tested to see if he's a carrier, or the possibility of even having it. That being said, if her partner isn't a carrier then you don't have to worry - you need two copies of the defective gene to cause CF.

Hi Annie
i have had just had a son with cf out of the blue. I have 2 other children who dont have cf. I didnt know i was a carrier. I have 2 cousins with cf but i never thought i would be a carrier as i had 2 children previously but to a different father. My husband now has never had cf in his family come out before but now we have our benjamin. As long as the father is not a carrier she will be ok, but he probably should be tested to make sure. Someone on your daughters side must be a carrier for her to be a carrier. Nice and confusing hey. If you are in America you are lucky as you are tested but in Australia they dont test you if you dont ask or have a family history. Best of luck

I just want to echo what everyone else has said. I, too, found out I was a CF carrier after the birth of my first child. Why? Because the test is simply getting more common during pregnancy, so I was tested this time, but not last time. If the father is tested but does not have a carrier gene, there is nothing to worry about CF-wise. If he does, then I would get the first child tested just in case. The second child can be tested either through an amniocentesis or at birth with a blood test (through a CF accredited clinic, preferably). I'm choosing to wait until birth, but lots of people get the amnio to prepare themselves either way. Good luck-it's hard to play this waiting game.

Hello I also was one of those unknown carriers and knew nothing about CF until i had the routine blood work done and found out i was a carrier then had my husband tested and believe it or not he is a carrier also.. so i chose to have n amnio done just to prepare myself and everyone else for the long hospital stay due to a blocked bowel that im glad we prepared for becuse it was a long stay! but we are doing good now (knock on wood) and hopefully will stay that way..

A number of states -- Minnesota and North Dakota have JUST started doing newborn screening for CF. Since January -- there have been 3 cases diagnosed in Fargo, ND alone. So when you had previous children, maybe they didn't do carrier or newborn testing at that time.

With DS, it was a complete surprise when he was diagnosed. No family history of CF and they didn't do carrier or newborn screening at the time.

I didn't know anything about CF until I had my 2nd daughter 21yrs ago. There was never any mention of it in the family. But since then I found out that my aunty died at the age of 16 of TB(they said) and there were premature deaths in my ex husbands family too to do with chest probs.
I have an older daughter who was tested some yrs ago, she is a carrier and has 2 boys. Her boyfriend was tested and he is not a carrier, but both her boys could still be carriers as they could have inherited my daughters faulty gene as you only need one to be a carrier.
Hope this helps

Hi,
It's me again. Just reread your message. You don't say whether you or your husband have been tested. For you daughter to be a carrier, either you, or your husband or even both of you have to be carriers and if you are both carriers there is only a 1 in 4 with every pregnancy that your child could have cf or 1 in 2 that they are a carrier.

Annie,

I have created a "table" of probability on my website for information regarding the inheritance of the CF gene. I have tried to make it user friendly so hopefully it's fairly simple to look at and read. Maybe this will help you understand a little bit better how your daughter ended up as a carrier of CF.

Here's the website, <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cysticfibrosismaleinfertility.com/Where_to_begin.html">http://www.cysticfibrosismalei...om/Where_to_begin.html</a>

Also, has her husband been tested to see if he is a carrier, or the son to see if he might have CF (only if both parents are carriers is this possible).

I never knew i was a carrier of cf until my son was diagnosed with cf. I nor his father knows of family history of cf but it may have been so long ago before they knew what it was.

My daughter was the first in our family to have CF. Most of my family didn't even know what CF is was back then. Before you could be tested for the gene, my brother had a boy with CF, then my sister was tested, she and her youngest daughter carry. Thank God for the test. It gives us choices.

Julie, I looked at the "table" and I see a mistake. The "CF Parent" is coded as half blue/half pink instead of all pink. Maybe if that is fixes it would be easier to understand.
