my hypothesis on the mechanism behind the clubbing of fingers

I see your point & even Dr's sometimes think clubbing is tied to lung function, but I disagree. I had very good lung function until my late 20s, but always had clubbing.
<br />
<br />I was watching <i>Dr G Medical Examiner </i>one night & one of her cases had finger clubbing and she tied the clubbing to digestive issues and I had severe digestion issues as an infant/toddler, so that theory may be correct?
<br />It could be tied to mutations, as someone else mentioned.

this is really interesting, thanks for the info. I was unaware that people were born with clubbing, and that people had clubbing when their lung function was really good. My fingers are slightly clubbed, and they got this way after a period of neglecting to do treatments, low lung function, etc.

I also noticed that when I'm sick, when I wake up in the morning my fingers will seem normal, but then they swell up throughout the day as though there was some kind of damage to them and the cells were repairing. I attributed this to low oxygen at night, hypoxic damage to the fingertips, and cell repair (inflammation, increased blood flow, swelling) during the day.

Either way, I suppose my theory is incorrect since some people are born with clubbing. Perhaps there are multiple underlying mechanisms?

Finger clubbing related to digestion is interesting! As I said earlier, growing up I had GREAT lung function but always had clubbing. My digestion as a kid, however, was always really bad. I was always having belly aches and it took several years to get my enzymes right. I wonder if it's a nutritional issue as well as digestion damage?

Now, I wonder how many of you all that grew up with clubbing are among those that were born with meconium illeus? *raises hand*

Hmmmm...

It looks like both theories may be correct per this Wikipedia page:

My fingers have been clubbed since I was little. My mom worried about my hands before my diagnosis. My fingers are very, very, very clubbed.... I look like I have E.T.'s fingers. I had excellent lung function until recently (now it is icky). The clubbing doesn't seem to have gotten worse with the lung function.

No meconium illeus here, Erin. Sorry!!
