My Parents Smoke

Hey,
Both my parents smoked as well...hell even i smoked for a good 4-5 years (not very proud of it, but whatever)

I think the difference between you and I is that i never really bothered my parents with their smoking, because frankly, it never really bothered me. However, i know that if i was getting sicker and sicker (esp at 15) then they would probably at least smoke outside for me!

I can't imagine parents who are that ignorant about thier childs health. Its not like they have to do anything....just stop smoking! At least ask them to smoke outside...

You sound pretty healthy, and especially mature for doing your treatments at such a young age with pretty good lung function. The teenage years are wierd for cfers. I remember when i was 15ish, my lung function dropped to 70-60 for no reason...and the doctors wanted to put me on pulmozyme. I didn't really do it, so they stopped, but when i was 18, my lung function was at 88%...and now it hovers at 80% (I'm 24). Your fev1 might go down for a bit, but they can also go up. Just get away from that freaking smoke!

There was a girl who lived in my town a few years ago. She had CF and was in 4th grade when she died. Wanna know why she died? Her parents both smoked like chimneys and did it in the house. If I had known, I would've called DCF.

I don't say this to scare you, but to make a point. What they're doing is so beyond irresponsible it really pisses me the hell off. I say call DCF on them, seriously. Having CF and your parents smoke with you in the car, in the house, is CHILD ENDANGERMENT. (They're even starting to look at smoking with healthy children nearby as child endangerment).

I know the idea of calling DCF on your parents is scary. But they're screwing with your health and your life. They could be cutting YEARS off for you, and it's in your best interest to call DCF.

If you want to try the letter or whatever first, feel free. But since they laugh it off when even your docs ask if they still smoke, chances are, the letter won't work. In which case, you should look up the number for your nearest child welfare agency.

According to your myspace, you live in Australia. I don't know Australia's system well, but these are some websites you want to take a look at:

Please please don't let it slide because they're your parents. This is totally irresponsible, and completely uncalled for. They are taking YEARS off your life by being so frickin selfish. Check out the websites I left, please.

I had a friend light up a cigarett not once, but three times in my own house! I was kind and polite the first time by snatching the cigarette and putting it out onto his jeans. The second time he lit up...I was not so kind. I took my girlfriends pepper spray and coated his entire pack of cigarettes with it. When he lit that third cigarette and took that first big puff, I thought I had killed him....that selfish ***** was coughing as hard as a CF'er. Needless to say we are not friends anymore, but I like to think we were never friends. My point to this story is not to do what I did, but you need to be way more aggressive! Do what emily said and check out those web sites. I just cant imagine a parent smoking in front of their child period! Let alone a child with CF. Im so frustrated right now I could head butt a kitten.

Along with a few other substance abuse issues my dad did in front of me growing up, he also smoked like a chimney too.
I know how you feel and how fursterating it can be.
He always wondered why I locked myself in my room 95% of the time. He used to get mad and get very angry with me that I never wanted to spend time with him and my mom in the living room. He just chalked it up to me being a bratty teenager. It was just a selfish way of living and nothing I did or said changed anything it only made it worse.

I did not have relatives that I could have moved in with.
Instead I waited out until I was 18. About four months after I turned 18 I moved out into my own apartment.
I later married and bought our own house. My dad came over one holiday and tried to smoke in my house. I just let into him and my mom have it!!! I told him that my house is not to be smoked in and he wasn't aloud to do any of his other bad habits that he so blatenly (sp) tried to do in my guest bedroom.

Since then I have had other outs with him and no longer talk to him. But shortly before I stopped talking to him he respected my rules because he had to.

My whole point about this is that unless you call CPS and get them involved, or move in with relatives, your only option is to wait until you are old enough to move out because they dont sound like they are willing to change, just like my dad never did.
Good luck to you! Do all you can for your own health!!!! I admire your maturity!!!

<u><b>No matter how you look at this issue, its child abuse!!!!!</b></u>
