my roommate, Ella

I'm in the hospital right now for a routine clean out, but I am concerned about my roommate.

my docs put me in isolation whenever they can, but in the winter the floor is usually so full that i have a roomie. anyway, this trip my roomie is a baby, who i think is a month or so old. she is the skinniest thing i have ever seen and already has a g tube. i keep hearing them say "we're going to do a sweat test just to rule CF out".
however, from the sounds of her coughing and how incredibly tiny she is, and listening to them talk about how she's losing even more weight despite the g tube, i am worried that maybe she does have cf.

personally i don't give a damn about cross contamination guidelines and i regularly am in close contact with other cystics. if i catch a new bug, i knew the risk.
i am however concerned that i might give her something. she's so young, i dont really think she would have anything new to give me anyway, but if they think cf is possible, shouldn't they have us in seperate rooms?

I would talk to someone. Most hospitals have Infection Control Department. IF this baby has CF....it most certainly should not be with another CFer. Thank you for being concerned. Now PLEASE speak up!

DEF get that checked out. If that baby does have CF, he/she should def be in a different room. NOT that i dont care about you....but your right, the baby prob doesnt have any bugs you dont have, so she isnt a danger to you. Thats ridiculus that they would even think about putting you in that same room, if there is even the slightest chance.

Yep, Melissa is right, you need to get someones attention about that situation. First of all a cf patient being in a room with ANYONE else is a bad idea, but if the roommate has cf its even worse. This would be a good time to inquire about doing tune-ups at home. And another thing...... Who ever heard of a baby in an adult room in the hospital? Don't they usually have a pediatrics dept or a separate room for babies? I have never seen a baby in a room with an adult. Even in a pediatric ward they always have the babies with the babies and the older kids with older kids....

i told my nurse my concerns, and she asked *someone* ...i think the head nurse. that nurse said "it's such a slim chance that ella has cf. they're fine together".

but after talking to ella's mom, i just found out that ella is three months old, and seriously looks like she is a few weeks at most.

i am supposed to go home tomorrow, but if i dont i will bring it up with my pulmonogist, as he might have stronger feelings about the risk than the nurses.

diane- i am still in peds, and they try to isolate me, but when it doesn't work i get roomates of every age. i didnt know they tried to arrange it by age.

I Kind of figured you were probably still in Peds. I am just surprised they put you in with a baby. I have never seen that before . Usually they keep babies with babies and teens with teens or maybe a little younger, but not a baby. It's good that you may be going home soon. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
