Thanks for everyone's responses. At this point in tome I have no symptoms. However when I cultured it I was very sick. Knock on wood I have been healthy and my pft's actually improved since I have been on the Primxin.

Yes, I have consulted an infectious disease doctor. In fact, although I live in IL I go to Nat'l Jewish in Denver. Who is your doctor there Joni? I had my left lung removed in Denver last year and hoped to live infection free for awhile on my good lung. Now it's not so good. My doc in Denver is on vacation this week so I am going through the wait and worry syndrome until next week.

@LouLou, I was told by the infectious disease doc that M. abscessus can be found almost anywhere; showers, dirt, medical appliances, basements, keyboards, shopping carts, everywhere - especially if it's somewhere damp. She said it was nearly impossible to guesstimate where I contracted it from. *shrugs*
Thanks for your reply!

@Deb, I'm glad you have no symptoms, and that your lung function hasn't changed. I hope you stay that way! <3

Joni,
I see Gwen Huitt as well. She is fantastic. And she trained under Michael Iseman who I saw 20+ years ago when I grew M-avium long before it become common. I feel much more comfortable with my care since I made the trip to Denver and continue to keep in touch with them.

Hello everyone I have question for you. My dad diagnosed with myc. abscessus almost 4 years ago. THanks to you I've just learnt that m. abscesssus is the type of myco. abscessus . My question is does this illness repeat itself? my dad used antibiotics for two years then doctor said it's enough and wanted to see my dad three times a year for check up. Since two years dad was just going for check up. General conditon of my dad is ok but sometimes a little bit of blood was coming from his sputum but it stoped in one day. 3 weeks ago he bleeded again. He went to doctor. Doc took x-ray and gave CT and he said illness repeated itself again (a littlle bit worse than before). THis made us worried.Doctor is going to talk to other doctors to decide about the threatment. Is this repeatition normal? Is this illness serious one or is it normal that it repeat itself and does it get better with antibiotics? We really don't know anything about this illness. I would be happy if you share your knowledge about this with me. Thanks in advance

<br>Interesting to see others experiences. I've had Myco Ab. for about 15 years. I have cavities in my lungs and have frequent alternating treatments of 9 months oral Azithromycin & Rifabutin with nebulised Amikacin & Aztreonam. I know I need treatment by the amount of blood I cough up. I also have the infection in my intestine which has caused much damage & my ascending colon had to be removed. My transverse colon is now affected but I try to manage the symptoms!
