NAC Question

I can't figure out how to send a PM, have only replied to them, so...

Nightwriter and others who use n-acetylcistiene:
Do you use PharmaNAC from BioAdvantex? I got my pulmonologists approval for it and have been using it for about six months (since reading about it on NoExcuses' blog). You mentioned in the HTS thread that it is still being investigated.
I am wondering if we could compare notes:
I read a U.VA study wherein the mice forgot to breathe when on high doses of NAC--a necessary trigger chemical was blocked or not produced. My pulmo said that the dose range of 900-63000 mg/day is fine. I do 2 tabs (1800 mg).
How much do you use and what have you heard in the negative?
Also, I have been eating a lot of food with turmeric, curcumin and oregano (I've got a garden and love Indian food). But I am curious which brand and dose you use for the turmeric.
Thank you!
I also wanted to tell everyone about an herb combo that I used to eat a lot as a kid and recently started eating again. My mom's best friend when I was little was from Lebanon. She introduced my mom to something called Zaatar/Zatar. It is mainly ground oregano and thyme, some salt and sesame seeds too. I buy it off the Internet (DaynasMarket.com) but my mom gets it from Middle Eastern stores in the DC area. You can put it in mayo for sandwiches and on salads. The most popular way to eat it is to dip bread in olive oil and then in the herb. I love it that way, but maybe if you aren't used to it, you would want to do the mayo and salad disguise. (My husband calls it my twigs and seeds.) I eat a couple tablespoons a day with tomato/mayo sandwiches. I think it tastes fantastic and oregano and thyme are considered to have great anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
I hope I don't sound like I work for the Zaatar Importers Foundation ;-) I just think it is great when a medicine is a basically worry-free food.

Hi Melissa <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I give my daughter Breanna Source Naturals NAC 1000 mg in the A.M. and 1000 mg in the P.M. We just began this about 2 months. Of course her Docs can't recommend NAC because it hasn't been proven effective, they do say it is being investigated as a form of treatment. However, I have read and trust the PEOPLE in the CF community who have actually experienced taking NAC and I must say I have heard alot of good stuff! It may work for some and it may not work for the others, as with everything. My daughter hasn't really been stable enough and I don't believe enough time has been allowed to see a difference. Maybe I will try another brand, any suggestions?

I am looking for a good brand of Turmeric, know of any ?
The twigs and seeds sounds yummy! I'll have to try!

Take care,
Gina

Oh, by the way...

To send a PM just click on the 3rd icon at the top right of your message, it looks like a person with an orange shirt on, not the one with the ! on it.

Hi Melissa,

I think the last time we communicated on here we were talking about finding smell-free gyms. I hope you found one. I also do not know how to send a PM unless I hunt around for a post that someone once wrote and then I click on the little picture of a person at the top of the box and click on that.

Anyway, answering your questions about NAC and Tumeric... I heard about Tumeric nearly 20 years ago when an Indian friend, who is really knowledgeable about herbal remedies, would always give me Tumeric in milk for my cough. She would always say that it was important to take tumeric and chili pepper to help with congestion -- but I didn't.

Then about 10 years ago, my neighbor who was a doctor told me to take NAC -- but I didn't.

Okay, so I'm a really slow learner. I think both supplements are really helpful. I am really careful about trying new things. One of the problems with supplements is how much to take and how long do you try them until you see results.

So even when you have the dosage right, sometime you quit before it has a chance to do any good. And with me, here's another problem -- if I think the stuff is working, I take higher and higher doses, which has ended up harming me.

Case in point: I once read about a doctor at UCLA who had given people with chronic bronchitis 10 drops of Tabasco Sauce in V8 juice and that it reduced their symptoms. Soon I was putting 20 drops in. Then I started putting raw chile in, then more chile, until...I gave myself an ulcer. So now I run everything by my doctor to make sure I'm not doing something incredibly stupid to myself.

When it came to trying NAC and Tumeric, there wasn't a lot of research on either. I did some internet searches (which half the time is wrong) and I think I started seeing a consensus for a reasonable dosage. Actually, the NAC dosage that I take is the same as you are taking daily. I take 600mg three times a day with food. The dosage that I take for Tumeric is 900 mgs twice a day. I had read that there was some evidence that Tumeric was effective on certain Pseudomonas strains and that the CF Foundation was launching a study. And that they were also studying NAC. The studies are currently listed on the CFF website where I think they are in Phase II which is always good. That's when they start refining dosages.

You asked about what brands I take. I buy my vitamins at Vitacost.com, a discount website. I use their own brand which is called NSI. The Tumeric is standardized which is very important because some brands have lead in it. I just recently saw that Consumer Labs listed the NSI brand amongst brands that had no contamination in recent testings by them. I have also bought vitamins at the Vitamin Shoppe.

I am not aware of any negative side effects with either. The only thing is that my doctor friend who suggested NAC, recommends is that you take either a few days or a week off every month (I can't remember) because he says that it gives the liver a rest. I can give you his website if you'd like.

By the way, I did try Orgegano Oil after reading about it on this site and I couldn't stand the taste or the burning sensation. I then put in capsules and I still couldn't stand it. However I will try your twigs and seeds.
