NAC

Hey all!

Just wondering what NAC actually is? I read a little about it in Amy's blog but am still not clear on what it is or what it's for. I'm assuming it's a nebulized drug. From what I gather, it's not an antibiotic, but it treats inflammation? Or does it just treat overall lung issues with inflammation being a bonus? I've read some other stuff though that has me thinking it's a mucus thinner, like pulmozyme...

My doc has NEVER mentioned it and I was wondering, depending on what it does and what it's for, if I should bring it up?

Thanks

another stupid one...is "fizzy NAC" the same as "NAC" or am I now asking about two different things?

Sorry to be so out of the loop!

(Glad I'm not the only one, Regina)

I always was under the assumption that NAC is mucomyst, the fizzy NAC, is an oral tablet that you drink with water/juice, acts like alka seltzer.

The fizzy NAC I think is supposed to help cough and clear out mucus, some people even say they coughed up pure hard plugs! I take it, but I dont cough u panything hard. The first few days I take/drink it, I get deep rumblings in my chest and with 3 or 4 coughs get a huge goop out... and that happens a few times each day... after the initial few days, I feel like it mainly helps with inflammation, much like symbicort where I just feel I can breathe deeper w/o that feeling in a deep breathe when you feel like there is no more room.

Anyways, mucomyst was like pulmozyme for cf'ers before there was pulmozyme (from what I have heard)... so they inhaled it and it thinned mucus out. Some older cf'ers like it better than pulmozyme actually and continue to neb it.

Technically you can drink regular NAC but since it smells like rotten eggs, its difficult to get it down, hence the fancy fizzy kind. You have to get the pharmanac kind b/c its packaged correctly to where no air can get in and oxidize the mucomyst beforehand... I have a g-tube, and have rx mucomyst so I could have my insurance pay for it rather than buy the boxes of fizzy NAC which can add up.

Hope this helps. Im still unsure exactly how it works... I kinda took it as the NAC does something to something that makes our white blood cells aka inflammation to where they dont produce as much? Therefore less inflammation in the lungs... but thats just how I have it in my head.

I have been reading on and off (mostly off) I was getting too much info, sounds weird I know and have the nerve to admit that. I started reading again abt Sept. and started posting as well, sometimes I felt my experience at this old age wld help someone? I must say everyone on here is so informed abt CF, but I too get confused with alot of the abbrevations,I sometimes feel lost. EJ I hope you are doing better every day with yr. IV's. I have used Pulmozyme since it came out? does anyone know when that was I forget? Pat/55-CF
