Neb before bed?

I was wondering if anyone else uses their nebulizer before bed? I cough a ton at night, so if I don't do the neb before bed I can't sleep to sleep because of the coughing. However if I do the neb before bed I can't fall asleep because I'm so hyper and jumpy. Does anyone else have this problem? The doctors have moved me up to 3 vials in the neb 3x a day, much more than I'm used to. Any advice is appreciated as I've slept about 8 hours in the last 3 days. Thanks, Caitlin

Yes it can. Albuterol is a beta agonist, however it does have some alpha agonist properties which will increase your heart rate and cause that jittery feeling. Xopenex was supposed to be more beta 2 specific, but I still noticed some alpha agonism with it. You could ask to be switched to xopenex and give it a try.

The other option is to use a longer acting bronchodilator earlier in the evening, which might carry you through the night. Talk with your doc about options.

Can you clarify how much albuterol you are nebbing? 3 vials of albuterol each treatment 3 times a day, or 1 vial 3 times a day for a total of 3 vials
It makes me a little shakey and I wouldn't be able to fall asleep immediately after a treatment but I'm fine after about an hour. Have you talked to your dr about trying other bronchodialaters like zopenex or there are a few others (i'm completely blanking on names)

3 vials each treatment. I have alot of mucus forming in my chest and it seems to be the only thing that helps. I'll definitely ask my dr about switching, I didn't know there was a better option. Thanks Jonathan and Robert.

I got TERRIBLE shakiness and tachycardia with albuterol, so they switched me to Xopenex in both the neb and inhaler forms. While I still have a bit of shakiness with the Xopenex on the neb, it's no longer an issue with the albuterol. It's so much less noticeable, though, with the neb, definitely look into it, but generally the insurance will only pay for it if you have tachycardia with albuterol, because it's crazy expensive.

Yep, albuterol can be the kiss-o-death for sleeping. Increased BP and heartrate. Have you tried straight HTS w/0 the albuterol? Its not quite as effective, but it at least helps a little bit. I am in the same boat. Cough cough cough and no sleep if I DONT do a nebbie, and jitter jitter jitter and no sleep if I do a full one w/bronchodialator.

We're fortunate as DS nebs .5 ml of albuterol with a vial of atrovent solution 3 times a day. Last one is right before bed and doesn't affect him.
