Neb cleaning question/replacement question?

After reading the "how often do you sterilize your nebs" thread, I have a question. My son just started on Xopenex last week, we were given 1 nebulizer at the peds. office and then 1 when we purchased the compressor. Now, both of these nebs are disposable and the directions say "rinse with hot water after each use and soak in a hot water/vinegar solution for 30 minutes at night, air dry". I asked about boiling and doc said NO! So, those of you that are boiling nebs, are they disposable? I really want to boil, but is there some reason you can not boil disposable nebs? Also, in the directions it says the neb last 14 days, but the pharmacy said monthly, so should I get a new one every 2 weeks or every month? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm just wanting to make sure I do what's best for my little one.

We use the pari nebs that aren't disposable. They last about 6 months and can be boiled. I did try boiling some other nebs that the RT department gave us and they <i>melted</i>.

I guess, I'd want to make sure that you can properly clean, sterilize them. Disposable to me means toss after each use. Did you check the nebs website and see what they suggest. I know the pari neb that came with our nebulizer still had the vinegar instructions with them, but the RT who trained us in stressed NOT to use vinegar anymore.

Go buy a PARI LC Plus nebulizer. They can be boiled and they last 6 months.

Vinegar does not kill CF bacteria, so boiling is a must.

Okay, another question. Where do you guys purchase your pari neb? I see that you can purchase online, but can you get them at medical supply store or pharmacy? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have never had to deal with this before! Also, will I need a "prescription" from the doc to purchase it? Stupid questions I know!!!!

most pharmacies or medical supply stores will require an Rx. not all do, although it's the law. you can order at a local med supply store (where you would get oxygen, or a compressor, etc).

make sure it's a preferred store from your insurance so your co=pay will be cheaper.

I've ordered online from american allergy -- didn't need a prescription, just paid out of pocket, didn't submit to insurance. Also bought filters and a bubbles mask. We got our nebulizer while DS was in the NICU and the local medical supply company doesn't carry pari nebulizers and weren't much help.

I also get a backpack full of freebies from the RT at our CF clinic. Last time we went in for an office call and DS had a culture done at his office, he asked if we needed anything. We've gotten a lot of paris and some odd brands, too.

Also, when we got our tobi from the CF Services pharmacy, we could get a nebulizer every other order, too.
