Hi.

I know there was a post similar to this some weeks ago. I was wondering if anyone uses milton solution (cloro isocianurate) to sterilize nebs. It´s similar to bleach. They are tablets that you put in water and they are suppose to sterilize children´s bottles etc. Our clinic recomended it to sterilize nebs, but I don´t know if it will be strong enough. Also I am not sure if you have to rinse afterwards with steril water. The thing sais not to rinse after use for baby bottles but I don´t know if it would be the same with nebs.
I found this article about desinfection guidelines in cf (page 45). (google infection control recomendations for patient with cystic fibrosis).I cannot atach it , too long. One of the methods uses bleach 1:50 dilution. So now I don´t know if it would be better to change to house bleach instead of the tablets. What do you think?. Anyone uses bleach to desinfect?

I don't know if I would want to use bleach to do that <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> Just doesn't seem safe to me even in that small of an amount. But that is just me and I am weird <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I am interested in what people say about the tablets though.

I put mine in water in the microwave for 12 minutes and it works for me <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi amy,

I wrote nebs, but I am talking about the device we use for chest theraphy, it´s call spirometre??? don´t know how to traslate to english. It is similar to pep or acapella but you have to do a force inspiration through it instead of espiration like acapella. It´s made of plastic and I´m afraid it can melt in the microwave. It´s not too expensive, so maybe when I get a new one I can try that. But I don´t want to risk now boiling or using microwave. What about alcohol 70?.

I wouldn't use the tablets because I've never seen in writing it endorsed for sterilization of respiratory equipment. There's a big difference between sterilizing baby bottles and something you are going to suck into your lungs. I'd stick to one of the 3 CFF recommendations (bleach, H2O2 or alchohol) all of which are rinsed with sterile water (not distilled). Also you can dishwash them but personally I would only do this with a diswasher exclusive for neb parts. Somehow you have to assure it gets to the correct temperature. Sakasuka uses this method so you could pm her if that seems like the way to go for you.

Personally I use the CFF H2O2 method on all nebs. On the eflow I use the suggested cleaning process and then sterilize by soaking in a isopropyl alcohol bath and let air dry before use.
