On the first visit to the CF center at two weeks old they prescribed albuterul and ordered a nebulizer for Ben. They said that way when he needs it we will be ready but that he didn't need to start it. Well at his 2 month appt. we mentioned that he sounded stuffy at night alot. (We could hear him from two rooms away) They said we could use it if we really felt it was neccesary, but he may get jittery. Well, I haven't used it yet; after that visit he seemed to not be so noisy. Now he is starting to sound congested again, he is 3 months. I am curious about when others started to use their nebs and if you use them for problems or for preventitive. Thanks for the input!

My children both started albuterol and pulmozyme (another inhaled drug) as preventative when they were diagnosed at a month old. They didn't have respiratory problems, just digestive. A few yrs later, the drs said we only need to give albuterol when they are congested. It probably is a good idea to at least start one nebulizer drug regularly so they will have learned to have sit still as toddlers. Also, people often use another drug called xopenex instead of albuterol. It doesn't cause the jittery, hyperactivity. I have never noticed my kids getting hyperactive from the albuterol. They are hyperactive regardless of albuterol. If it were me, I would try to albuterol and see if it helps him clear his lungs.

My daughter began her nebs at about a month and a half. They started her on it even before her offical diagnosis. It was at first just preventative but later found out that she actually had pneumonia Pneumonia's long gone now we do them as preventative. My daughter use Xopenex instead of albueterol, it's a bit more expensive but she has had zero side effects. The doctors did give us an perscription for albueterol (because of the cost of the Xop) and we will be trying it within the week.

DS has been on duoneb (albuterol and atrovent) to open up the airways prior/during CPT since he was a week or so old. While on maternity leave for 3 months, we did CPT with nebs 4 times a day or if he got a cough or wheeze. Otherwise 3 times a day. He started tobi when he was 3 months old. Pulmozyme when he was 2 1/2.

I've never noticed any hyperactivity or jitters. In fact early on he'd usually sleep thru or fall asleep during cpt and nebs. Seemed to calm him.

Our CF doctor in the City wanted us to be proactive with CPT, including nebs whereas the local CF clinic tends to only prescribe if there are symptoms.
