Nebulized antibiotics

Lol I wouldn't worry too much about it. When I was a kid I always did all my treatments in the living room and my sisters grew up just fine; in fact my little sister is extraordinarily bright.

They rarely get sick too.

I had an RT literally RUN out of the room once I started my TOBI dose, even with the filter. She also tried to get my parents to leave. I only use the filtered neb when in the hospital anyways.

I was told it is b/c it can cause people to become resistant to it, if there was a scenario where they would need it. I guess if my mom/boyfriend got pneumonia with PA then she/he would probably not be able to be treated w/ inhaled TOBI.

I can see it more with an RT b/c they are around sick people more often so the likelyhood of them needing inhaled abx might be higher. Plus you are in a hospital and the concerns of resistant bugs is extremely high.

My doctors have never said that no one should be in the room with me... I mean, there is no way around it for kiddos too little to do treatments on their own and it is pretty unrealistic for even adults to NEVER have others present while them doing treatments while its family or spouses or even their own kids (or friends).

Compared to other things CF'ers need to worry about it, I dont fret AT ALL about this.

I have done Tobi in the past which I was told to keep all pets & ppl away from me while doing it or use a filter.

I am currently doing inhaled Amikasin which again i was told the same thing by a different center.

So I think you should stay away from fam & pets when doing it ..

Hope that helped . Take care <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0"> joni

They always try to make me use a filter on my nebs at the hospital it's this huge bulb at the end of the neb, that when put on, I literally can't breathe through the neb! Insane. I never leave the filter on. I used to take the long tubes off the disposable nebs in the hospital just because they were cumbersome but a RT once told me that it helps to minimize the tobi let out into the air b/c the accordion-like tube helps catch the exhaled medicine and it just condenses onto the tube... so I leave those on now. But again, I do tobi around my BF all the time.

Anytime I have visitors in the hospital they are asked to put on a mask while I do my nebs. We humor them, then just take the mask off once they leave. *Shrug* Its just the same thing everyones been saying, they don't want your loved ones to grow resistant to the abx from constant unnecessary exposure, because if they need them they won't be able to use them. But with all the antibiotics out there it seems silly that if they grow a resistance to tobi that there would be NO other drug that would help them. *rolls eyes* Especially considering doctors start off prescribing antibotics such as amoxicillian .

*Side note here: I asked my doc the other day if I was becoming resistant to tobi because I found it not working as well.... he told me that the inhaled for of TOBI is 300x more potent than the IV form, so basically its REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY Hard to become resistant to it --- that in mind, if I have such a hard time becoming resistant to it and I actually inhale it directly 2x a day month at a time, how is my boyfriend who's around maybe for a few minute a session going to become resistant?? end of side note*

Although, I do think the air purifier is an awesome idea. I need to look into that one asap.
