Oh the fun of setting off the dorm room smoke detectors every day. One of the few parts of college I don't miss. I'd say realistically the odds of campus safety actually catching you covering your smoke are pretty minimal. I had a lot of friends who smoked and covered their detectors and none of them ever got in trouble (for that anyway <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">) It's easy, and you can always uncover when you're not doing treatments.
Our smoke detectors also weren't hooked into the fire department, but they did send a message to campus safety. After having to come to my room a bunch of times to shut off the alarm, they finally started shutting it off remotely. Cut down on the beeping tremendously, so see if you can start getting them to do that. Eventually they started turning off the alarm even before I called. Also, our rooms had both the smoke detectors that sense haze and heat detectors. They probably won't let you (or at least they wouldn't for me), but you can try to talk campus safety into letting your room only be monitored by the heat sensors. Good luck!
