My son who will be 15 in 2 months got a g-tube 10 years ago. I had never heard of a feeding tube for acf patient ( now it is very common) They showedusa film witha child with one He was severly mentally and physicaly handicapped (you can imagine how that made him feel. He got one after much hesitation on my part. He gained 11 lbs the first year. It is harder on his self image now that he is a teenager than it was then but i think deep down heknows how much it helps him. My daughter who is 10 had never struggled so much withher weight therefore it's never been mentioned.

I am sorry for sounding so whiney, it really was a rough day and that evening sent me into melt down . I did not mean to give the impression that I was giving up work ( being a single mom I could not do that ) I just have to cut down on the hours I work as I have been told that he will be on for 8 hrs and he needs an hour between the feed and his treatments. As I now start at an un godly hour they have advised me to starrt working later in the morning which means less hors during the day.
I thank everyone for the ideas for getting him more comfortable with the idea.Everyone has told him that it is not anything he did or did not do, it is just becaues the cf fights him when he tries to gain weight. I think the doctor did a great job with the whole thing. He just has had a hard time lately with the pa and the extra treatments, I guess he is no different and he is just a little boy in the end.
Again I am sorry for sounding so awful I am honestly not that bad usually !

Don't worry about feeling scared and venting... we all have times like that. I didn't think you were doing anything other than reacting to something that might stress out your already stressful life, not to mention the implications of your sons health. Sometimes people forget the fear they felt when changes occur.

I have four children. My youngest has CF he will be 6 in April. He got his G tube last February and all in all he took it better than the rest of us. Which is the case most often. Things we think of as big huge major, he just brushes them off and says "oh well thats life"

The Maintenence of the Button is not that bad. we change his out every two- three months ourselves. I was very scared when the subject came up to get one too but in the end it was a very wise decision and he has gained so much weight with no fighting to get him to eat, cause we know he will get the nutrients either way.

I hope your talk with him goes well. WE have a Child Life Specialist here on the floor he usually goes to. He was a big help when he got his Tube and when he got his Port- A Cath placed. Maybe your hospital has one of those to help ease his feelings about the tube.

Let us know!

I can feel where you are coming from, sometimes it can get to even the best of us. We are in the same situation right now with the g tubes. The doctors are pushing for two of my kids to get them. I know in my heart it is the right thing, but it kills me to have to add one more thing to their regimen. But maybe in the end, it will make it easier for them, to not have to concentrate on eating every minute of the day. Good Luck.

I responded the "TO g-tube or not" thread with some possible ideas on weight gain ect. Not sure if they are relative but might help a little. Hang in there...this can all be very overwhelming at times. You're not alone!

Much support to you,
