Need an answer ASAP re: coughing blood

I just coughed up a big chunk of blood, it was dark and clotty. I don't know what this means, I've coughed blood before, but it was bright red. This was different, I thought it was a chunky plug and was very surprised to find blood.

Anyone know what this is? I called my clinic but I think they've gone for the day, I got the answering machine. Should I do my nebs or not (albuterol/ventolin and pulmozyme)?

How dark? If it was pretty dark and clotted already... It sounds like its just an old leak that has already healed.

I would do my treatment like normal. I only stop if I cough up fresh, bright red blood.

Hope this helps, but I wouldnt be too concerned... I often do this too. Who knows what your clinic says, but I would probably just do my treatment and watch for blood, if you spring a leak then obviously stop but I just think its probably on its way to healing etc.

Thanks! It's been a while for me and, well, coughing blood freaks out the best of us I suppose. Can't get through to my stupid clinic though, just when I need them, grrrr. I hope that's what it is.

Emily doesn't cough up large quantities of blood (bright red has never been more than streaking in sputum), but she's coughed up small chunks of hardened dark red/blackish blood that I have assumed is 'old' stuff. We usually see this when she's getting over an exacerbation and finally starting to clear lots of junk out that has probably been down there a while. Her drs know this is her 'sick normal' and don't seem concerned about it, though I will say I hate seeing blood too.

I'm not a real bleeder myself but I do when I'm sick. My clinic says anything under a teaspoon and they aren't overly concerned but if it's more than that especially in chunks call in asap. Do you have a on call doc where you are or are you in a regional area? If you're stressed it can't hurt to call and I would call in the morning anyway if nothingelse happens tonight.

Re meds, ventolin should be fine but definitely no pulmuzyme or hts tonight and no asprin, nurofen etc. If you have some ABDECK it couldn't hurt to take one extra for the K.
