Need Health Insurance

Hey. It's been alittle over 2 years since I've visited the message board. With 2 children having CF, it's been really tough for us. We are looking for health insurance that we can afford? The 2 girls are covered under COBRA at the moment, but we are about to run out of time for this. Does anyone have any information about insurance that we could get as a family? Thank you.~Deborah Shavershannonshaver@aol.comArkansas

Hi, have you tried for medical assistance? You'd be surprised how much you can make in some states and still qualify. It may take some fighting but with 2 children with CF, you might get it. Good luck,Andrea

In Calif. the have a free medical program called CCS for certain children medical conditions..one being CF. Ck your state thru State Social Services...you can ck online too, you may have to change the wording around to find it.Good luck...let us know if you get something thru the state

If you live in PA. there is a certain form you need to ask for. your social worker should be able to help you with that. It doesn't have anything to do with parents income.(MA card) It is given on the premise that the person your applying for can't work and doesn't have an income. That is what we have , now we have haad it probably 6 or 7 years. So I hope it hasn't changed since then. Good luck

You need to apply for Social Security DIsability for your girls. It is SSI for children. CF is one of the conditions that qualifies children for SSI. Go toyour local Social Security office or call the 800 number in the phone book to apply. They ask a TON of questions, but definitely worth it. If your girls qualify, they will automatically get covered by Medicaid in your state. Also ask at you clinic about Special Childrens Health Services. The also help cover CF expenses. Ask your social worker at clinic to assist you. Some states have special programs to help "Medically Indigent" children or those with CF. All states now offer insurance for children under 21 that do not have insurance. I checked for the name of the program in Arkansas and it is called ARKids First. It says that you can apply online and there is a lot of info on it (the income guidelines etc.) Go to the website, www.ARKidsfirst.com. There are several different plans under this program. For anyone else reading this from another state, all states offer this kind of program now. Go to www.insurekidsnow.com and click the link for your state to find out about benefits.

If you apply for SSI through social security, apply for medical assistance at the same time through the assistance office. Let them know that you have a case pending with SSI, too. It took a long time for SSI to finally go through for us and all the while we were paying co-pays and paying for insurance for our daughter, when Med Assistance should've been paying. We ended up having to get a lawyer to fight with MA for us too. They had lost 3 applications that had been mailed in to them, finally I went to the office and made sure it got into a person's hands. It (the MA )went through fairly quickly from then on. It's better not to wait for SSI to go through even though you will then automaticly get Med assistance because SSI can take up to a year to get resolved if you are turned down and have to fight for it. That is what happened with us.

Aloha Shannon,

I really do not have any idea's regarding health insurance, but if you have a problem with the cost of prescription drugs we may be able to help you. Due to my inability to afford my own medications I have developed a website which assists others within a certain income bracket to receive their medications free. If you need help then email me and I will direct you to the website and answer any questions you may have.

Aloha, and have a Happy and Safe Holiday Season. - Pamela

Did anyone ever resolve the insurance questions - we have been trying - my daughter's insurance is at $1,000 per month for her family and that doesn't count co-pays for doctor's visits and meds. She can't continue to affort this payment and we need to do something soon.

I agree you should apply for SSI for your children and they will be automatically covered by the state medicaid program with the SSI benefits.

If you need information on applying for SSI, I can email you something that I've given to others-you can ask anyone else on this site-the information is legit. If felt the need to state that since I am not sure if you are new, have been browsing the site for a while?????

In the meantime, I would go to the social services office nearest you and apply for Medicaid for your childre, they should automatically qualify because of the CF. That is the best thing you can do for this situation. If you need to email me with any questions about SSI stuff, please feel free to do so- division902@hotmail.com
