I need help/advice. I am the only one in my family who has ever had CF so Im going in blind and Im freaking out a bit. So I am graduating from a technical school a year from now, and my fiance and I would like to get married when he graduates (about a year and a half). The problem I have a feeling were going to run into is we'd be making too much money together to get state aid, and I am not sick enough yet for disability. But, were still going to go broke paying for medical costs.

I know alot of people simply dont get married, which I still don't understand... How are you paying for all of your medications/hospital visits? I live in Wisconsin so I know it varies from state to state, but can you qualify for medicare, or do most people have medicaid? And even with medicaid, doesn't paying for the medications still wipe out a large part of your income?

I guess im just asking, how do you guys pay for everything? We are seriously hoping that my fiance can get a job with state health insurance, but were planning for worst. What else is out there to help cover the cost of medical bills? ANY advice would be SUPER helpful

Thanks

I have this problem myself. My hubby and I have been married for 12 years now. We both work and make too much money for me to qualify for any type of financial aid.

At first I was like you, I was freaking out. But I finally realized that this is just something I'll always have...so I don't have any magical solutions. I just make sure I'm always covered under insurance, whether it was my own in the past, or on his-which is where I am now. I have been so very fortunate that his insurance has been great.

The only thing I can really tell you is to always know your benefits and if you have to argue, then so be it. I argued with my CF center for a couple of years before they were finally accepted into my insurance group. As far as medicines is concerned, I always try to get generics if I can. That helps out some.

I do not have insurance. I get Medicare in October. I have gone to the hospital which offers Charity Care. It's not *state* welfare, the hospital billing office actually goes by your income to see if you qualify or not. The doctors I do see I have paid out of pocket at a reduced/sliding scale rate.

It's been very difficult on me at times financially so I completely understand your concern. I also do not qualify for state aid.

You can only get Medicare if you are on SSDI for 24 months or more. Medicaid is state based and you should contact the Health and Human Services office in your county to find out the income limits for your state. If you get married, they WILL count your income. If you do not get LEGALLY married (have a ceremony, change your last name if you want to, but do NOT legally marry), it is very likely that they will NOT count his income in determining your medicaid elgibility.

For those who are religions (or maybe even those who aren't) and have an issue with the MARRIAGE thingy (benefits, being legally married versus just a ceremony)...

being "legally married" versus "cermeonial marriage" is just the DICTIONARY DEFINITION OF THE WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry but I've checked the bible through and through, and it simply says MARRIAGE. It's our country and society who decided the definition of "legally" married. Pretty sure the man upstairs ONLY cares about an eternal promise and committment to eachother, and maybe if it makes you feel better SIGN the darn marriage license, but don't file it. Then it's still in ink. The lord doesn't define marriage in terms of how our society has translated it, our society has decided what "legally" married is and as far as I'm concerned our society gets a LOT of things wrong

That's a loaded statement coming from someone who was once married.

Marriage is an instituation that was designed by GOD. In Malachi, God says that marriage is a covenant, one witnessed and sealed by Him. Without God, the term would not exist!

You have defined marriage as nothing more than a CIVIL agreement. Breaking a commitment or civil agreement can be done by mutual agreement and you can get up and walk away any time you want. However, a covenant is considered binding, in both the eyes of the land and the eyes of GOD. This is why we have legal marriage. The problem NOW is that society teaches our children to devalue the importance of a legal marriage through its various media outlets. Our society also pays heavily for unmarried couples and single mothers, which you are considered if you aren't legally married.
