We need the enzymes to digest fat and protein. Unfortunately, the fat and protein is where the big calories are, so anything that does not require enzymes is going to be low-calorie. =-(

My 2 1/2 year old daughter can eat raisins, grapes, bananas and jelly without enzymes. About the only things though!

Any fruit as a snack I will not taked enzymes, ie. bannana, fruit, grapes, watermelon etc. But pretty much everything else I take enzymes. However, I do change the amount of enzymes that I take depending on what I am eating. When I was a young child my mom opened the enzymes up and dumped them into a cup with Bosco ( I am dating myself ) and my little cup of chocolate treat was great before eating my meals.

Maybe you can open the enzymes up and mix with chocolate syrup??? When I was young the insides of the pill was poweder form now they are tiny little balls, so not sure how well it would mix up. You could try. Also, try flavored applesauce.
My mom always made it fun and acted like it was a dessert before my meal.

Good Luck.

Put our daughter's enzymes in apple sauce - consistency is just perfect for enzymes to hold on to.Done it since she was a baby, and have stuck to the same every since.

PS also find that by putting enzymes in apple puree, they don't get 'lost' in the food, especially with my daughter being so young. If we're not sure if she's gonna eat all her meal, then we have more control over enzymes and can give her more as and when.

I've heard that the enzymes dont work as well when put in dairy products...we have always used applesauce too OR ketchup when out and about. I give Reece those fruit snack in a bag (nemo, dora, scooby doo) w/out enzymes or raisins....But like was already said CFers need the fatty foods and you HAVE to give the emzymes when they get those foods.

You can put enzymes into any kind of pureed food, like pudding, ice cream, mashed potatoes, apple sauce, etc. I use to always take my enzymes in ice cream when I was young, and never had a problem with it.

Pretzel sticks don't require enzymes and fruit as far as I can tell. We were told to always put enzymes on something acidic like apple sauce or other fruit sauces. The enzymes like Creon are coated with something which can break down too early if alkaline substances like dairy are used...there is less chance of them working in the small instestine where needed. I would think the baby jars are most convenient anyways as they are resealable.

Are you just looking for a quick snack for out in stores and stuff? Just curious.

We keep a little cooler in the car with baby applesauce/enzymes/spoon and whatever snacks we have mostly power bars, soy yogurt, pretzel/nut/choc chip mixtures and some fruit. I will sometimes give him enzymes before we even go into the grocery because you just know they will have you open something!

Hope this helps.

My daughter does great with "loaded" mashed potatoes...we add heavy whipping cream, sour cream, extra butter, cheese....just whatever and the enzymes and she does great.....it is also aneasy way to get her the extra salt she needs in the hot weather...

Hi Friends, from Australia
In Oz, our Enzymes are enteric coated and should be taken with Acidic food as alkalinic food, ie yoghurt milk drinks etc, will make them start to pop and go to work in the throat, tummy etc, and cause problems. The idea of the enteric coating is that it takes 20 minutes for them to start working, same as for taking capsules. 20 minutes, becasue that's about how long it takes for them to reach the Small Intestine where they go to work.
Ideally, I give my 4 year old boy about 3-4 capsules per feed. I find it better to even them out over the course of the day. giving him a big fat meal with 6 or so just seems too much for his little body to handle.

Personally, I would recommend anybody with a small child starting solids to satart adding fat as soona s you can. To get some body fat in reserve for times of infection. Once they start running round from 12m/18months onwards it is pretty ahrd to get good weight on them.

I give DS fruit snacks, craisins, raisins, cut up fruit, juice, jelly beans, gummi bears, clear candy... He also likes pretzel sticks and they're so low in fat that we don't bother with enzymes.

Just in case you're worried about too much fat in the diet etc, or don't understand the reason for extra fat, it is because
FAT DELIVERS TWICE AS MANY CALORIES PER GRAM OF FOOD THAN CARBYS AND PROTEINS.
So it goes without saying, your child would need to eat 3 times as much per day to get the energy intake to put on weight.
I try not to worry about cholesterol. But I do give Joel Psyllium Husk everyday. Soluble fibre reduces the absortpion of cholesterol along with all of the other goodies it delivers, like drawing moisture into the colon for eg.

Good sources of Carbys are things like Polenta, Semolina, Pasta. I have tried this stuff fo rlong periods, but it just wasn't enought for Joel. Joel was 10 weeks prem and weighed 2lb 14oz. So he has a lot of catching up to do
