I was so good with needles until I was about 11, when I had a traumatizing incident involving a dehydrated me, all new interns on 4th of July weekend, and getting an IV started. I've finally stopped panicking when I get IVs started or blood drawn, but I still get really anxious. I wouldn't say it was ever a phobia, I just would freak out.

I'm not a fan of the numbing creams though- even though they numb the surface, it makes it harder for them to find veins on some people (i.e, me)-- and the cream certainly doesn't numb the digging that follows!

it is NOT in your head. and you can't just get over it. when i have blood tests they have to try up to over 10 times to find a vein. it hurts and its not pleasant at all. i guess you have no phobia's hey? people can't help the way they feel and attitude like that only make it worse.

I'm not saying I don't have any phobias. I don't like heights. And guess what, it's in my head. It may be unpleasant, but by psyching yourself up so much about it, only makes it worse. It's in your head. Before your next poke, do some slow breathing exercises to relax you and find a happy place. Needles are going to be a part of your life for the rest of your life. You don't have to like them, but they will seem a little easier if you learn to not work yourself up about them. Try the easy breathing and good luck.

I HAVE TRIED SAYING TO MY SELF BEFORE HAVING A JAB IT WONT HURT IT WINT HURT BUT GUESS WOT IT DOES NOT WORK SAYING THAT IT IS ALL IN YOUR HEAD IS LIKE SAYING THAT WHEN YOU SCRAPE YOUR KNEE IS THE PAIN FROM THAT IN YOUR HEAD TO ? I REALLY THINK IT IS RUBBISH I HAVE DONE ALL THE BREATHING STUFF AS WELL DOES NOT WORK EITHER I PERSONALLY THINK SOME PEOPLE CAN TAKE NEEDLES AND SOME CANT I FEEL SICK AS A DOG WHEN THEY COME NEAR ME ONCE THE NEEDLE IS IN I CAN WATCH THEM TAKE BLOOD AND WATCH THEM TAKE THE NEEDLE OUT IT IS JUST WHEN THEY PUT IT IN I DONT WATCH . MY ADVICE TRY THE NUMBING CREAM I KNOW IT HIDES YOUR VAINS BUT SOME DOCTORS DONT NEED TO SEE THE VAIN IF THEY CAN FEEL IT THEY CAN DO IT THAT WAY TO . GOOD LUCKK TO ALL MY FELLOW CFERS WITH NEEDLE PHOBIAS . BEST WISHES FROM JO

Yes needles hurt.. but heres what I do... I get REALLY pissed of at the needle when they are stickin me, even if it takes more than one stick...... THEN i ask the nurse for the needle after and I break the suringe in half like its a person I want to break in half.
If its an Iv its to small to break in half so I will grab something else and break the heck out of it. LOL

i had a PICC line snap off in my arm. not pretty. never had a PICC line since, id prefer to jump off a cliff. now i get creeped out [not physically going nuts, my brain just starts working overtime and thinks too much] if anyone pulls anything out of a vein. im always thinking 'oh boy what happens if this snaps' 'oh god there is something moving in my vein' etc etc. its the last thing you need to be thinking about when you have a needle/cannula removed, it should be a 'happy' time lol.

I agree that being afraid of needles is not in the head...it is a true fear. My veins are so little...they blow every time I get stuck for bloodwork. I'm even on coumadin right now because the last picc line I had...got a blood clot in it! So I have to get my blood drawn once a week...until they figure out the right dose for me. I dont have any good veins anymore...the woman stuck me 4 times to get blood...and blew 2 of the veins! So I know how the rest of you feel that dont like needles! I feel for you....take care!

wow, thats pretty weak ANONYMOUS! you obviously need prescription glasses of some sort or a dictionary to look up the difference between insertion and removal.

i dont know how you managed to turn 'needles going into skin' to 'soft cannulas being removed'. 2 completely different things. my post above, was reffering to sharp needles going into the skin and your rudeness [im assuming it was you telling them to get over it etc], not painless cannulas being removed. yes, i know my cannula phobia is in my head, where else do you think it is? you dont have to be smart to figure that one out but i guess if it makes you feel better to point out the obvious then thats ok by me. *shrugs*

p.p.s dea i too am on warfarin. i know how you feel about getting the dose right. ive been on it for about a month now and the INR still isnt high enough. what dosage do you take?
