Neglect vs. Belief

I can't help but to feel horrible for this poor 11-year-old. She died due to untreated diabetes while her parents joined a support group to pray. She hadn't even seen a doctor since she was 3-years-old. On top of that, these parents have 3 other children between ages 13-16. These other children are allowed to remain in the home with the parents. It is just me or are these parents completely brainwashed?

Have any of you ever heard of this same situation with a child suffering from Cystic Fibrosis? I'm not saying they should be tried for murder, but how can you deny healthcare for a sick child in today's society? To me, it's pathetic. Ignorance.

There are quite a few cases in which their religious beliefs have caused damage or death because traditional treatment was never received.

It is sad for the kids who dont have a say or dont know any better & cant speak for themselves....

If the person is an ADULT and want's to believe in something, and in turn neglect themselves and then die...Whatever, you can't protect people from their own stupid choices. But when the person is a minor and the same "We will pray to make them well" approach is used by the minors parents and peers, and the minor dies due to not being treated? Yes I think they should be charged with neglectful homicide, and not even manslaughter. Minors don't have the legal capacity to make their own wise decisions, but adults do. Minors should be protected and taken care of by adults, and minors need adults to facilitate their care in times of need. Not doing so just screams culpable negligence.

Remember Jim Henson? Also I had a very close friend in my teens named Scott. He got sick, but he had been sick in the past. I hadn't seen him for a week or so and was about to go pay him a visit, I get a call from his mother that Scott stopped breathing (I'm pretty sure Scott was a minor at the time, or JUST turned 18). We all freaked out. Apparently, scott was more than just sick, he had viral pneumonia. He got so weak he couldn't get up off the couch, and they just stayed there praying over him until he died.

Believing in God is fine...Spirituality is fine...Praying is Fine...Being a moron, especially when it involves minors is not fine. The parents in your example should be thoroughly charged and prosecuted to the fullest extent.

I've heard of this happening too many times (though never where CF was involved).
These parents who are putting ALL their faith in God, fail to understand that God also gave them a brain and God gave them doctors. One of the apostles was a dr, wasn't he, Luke? They spend all their time praying, but not using the resources God already provided to them. I mean, common - they probably work, to make money, to feed themselves, right?

They are taught that if they go to a dr, they simply aren't trusting God. They are incorrectly taught the true meaning of the words written in the Bible. They fail to remember that they are humans, subject to the laws of this earth.

Brainwashed? Yes.
