NeilMed sinus rinse for kids

I need advice on how to get my four-year-old to use sinus washes. I tried bribing him with candy. He is resistant even with that. I had pretty much given up and then realized that parents on this site may have some useful tips.

My son does not have CF, but does have bad allergies and is on a cocktail of meds and not all that improved yet. Luckily, unlike his mom, he has no asthma repercussions, just swollen, drippy eyes, nose and an eczema flare-up.

I think the sinus washes would help, but maybe he is just too young.

My almost 5 year old daughter just started doing rinses 2 weeks ago. She is still not doing it really well but at least she tries. I let her watch other kids doing it. I think that helps. You can find videos of kids doing rinses on You tube. Good luck.

My 8 year old doesn't do the sinus rinse (none of my kids do) and he doesn't have CF either, but he does has similar miserable seasonal allergies to your son. We have him on a cocktail of different things as well and the one I wasn't sure he'd do is the nasonex nose spray. He does it without issue and sees such a difference. I've never bribed him, just let him control the whole thing so it was on his terms. It took awhile, but we finally go to full doeses after a week or so.

My 4 year old (w/cf) and my 7 year old (no cf) do sinus rinses almost every day. It took a while for them to get good at it, but now they are each able to do it pretty much on their own.

We started out small, just a small squirt in each nostril, and for the first few days we just let it run out the same nostril. Just to let them get a feel for it. Then, we had them squeeze the bottle (with help, so it didn't go too fast) so they had some control over it, and we made it a goal to get the stream coming out the other nostril. With in a few days they were compteting to see who could do the "most" squirts, then it changed to "who can get the whole bottle done in 4 squirts." There have also been biggest booger contests.

Make sure that the water is slightly warmer than room temperature, but not too warm. My girls will not do it if the water has cooled too much. (We boil the water and let it cool before mixing the solution). Let him play and and fun with the rest of the water that's left in the bottle. I had to clean the bathroom mirror quite a few times because the girls would squirt each other's reflections - but this took some fear out of the bottle.

I definately think your boy can learn to do it - it will just take persistence and patience on your part. And a better bribe.
