DS started when he was 4. I bought one for myself and noticed he was stuffed up, so had him try instead. I started off by squirting it up his nose while telling him to keep him mouth open, "breathe through your mouth". He was soo intrigued by all the junk that came out. He wasn't too thrilled about doing it, but was really stuffed up. Nowdays he's a pro and squirts him itself..

i just got one for aidan and i think i did it wrong cause he completly flipped out and ran off. i think i squirted it to much to fast in his nose. he kept his mouth open. is the solution supposed to come out of their mouth too and make them cough? i made my hubby try it(lol) and he said it was aweful way too salty and it hurt him. like to forceful. i even made him try it slow and steady cause i thought it supposed to come out the other side of nose. but hubby was coughin on it to.

Lety,

Thanks for the tip about YouTube. That will impress, entertain and possibly convince my son. (He wants me to put a video of him playing guitar hero on youtube...somehow this isn't my #1 priority.)

Heather,
We too have had a positive experience with the nasal sprays. He is on one called Patanase and thinks it is cool. The nasal washes are another beast :)

Tami,
Thanks for the tips about using the warmer water and going slowly for a few days. I was laughing imagining your kids having speed and booger contests...and you, poor thing, cleaning the mirrors. My kids all tried the squirt bottle on day one, and I tell you, they looked at me with new respect afterward, knowing that I do it twice, sometimes three times, a day.

Liza,
I'll try the breathe-with-your-mouth-open coaching. Thanks for the tip. I tried to cheer over the booger we got out, but ds was too busy flailing backwards ;-)

Elizabeth,
Your experience with Aidan sounds familiar.
The solution is supposed to go in one nostril and come out the other. I have a lot of post nasal drip, and did want solution passing that way, so once I felt like I could control my throat--keep it closed--I started letting about maybe 1/4 of the water go down the back of my nose to spit out. Doing it right, you shouldn't cough from water getting in your upper airways.
I usually cough a couple minutes later from boogers that got loosened up and dripped down.
