New diabetic question

I have been feeling pretty strange lately...Friday night my eyesight became very blurry and I had a bit of vertigo, I couldn't think clearly and had problems articulating my thoughts. Saturday and Sunday I felt a bit "hungover" and all week long I haven't just quite felt to nuff. Hard to explain really but blah might cover it. I had my local doc order a A1C and it was 6(>5.7 is high). So I guess I am a "diet" controlled diabetic. Do these symptoms sound in line with any of your symptoms?

Hi Luke, Yes they sound inline with the way i felt right before i was diagnosed . I had the blurry vision, dizziness, tiredness. I also had extreme hunger no matter what i ate, and unbelievable thirst that never seemed to stop. At night i would be awakened by foot cramps, it wasnt a fun experience. Its good that you got an A1c done already so you at least have an idea of diabetes and you can watch your sweets and carb intake. With your wife being a nurse, it might be a big help to you. Im sure she knows a lot about diabetes and some helpful hints. I hope you are feeling better soon !

A lot of those symtpoms are symptoms not only of diabetes but of low bloodsugar. make sure anytime you feel strange and funny to check your bloodsugar and if it's low then have some OJ. That always works quickly!!

Luke, Mark had a GTT test recently and the docs told him it was borderline (they just love that word-don't they?) but he wasn't diabetic. We got a second opinion because although we love his CF doctor, Mark is his first adult CFer. The second opinion said he concured, BUT he gave mark a Glucose monitor so he can keep track of when his blood sugar is low (or when he gets that vertigo, shakey feeling, I need to eat NOW...). It is strictly for monitoring purposes, but the doc wants a look at it after two weeks and they will go from there. Maybe you should ask your doc about getting a device, just for monitoring at this point??

I am getting a free meter from a rep I know today. I haven't researched this AT ALL yet. My local guy told me that oral meds do not work in CFRD and I would have to go straight to insulin, was that the case with you guys?

mild cases can be controlled with pills. the reason why your doc probably thinks they dont work is because people eventually need to take insulin after a couple of years anyway. i felt like i was space walking in clouds when i had severe hyperglycemia 3 years ago [steroid induced].

If you're just totally against insulin shots to start with, and your Dr concurs, have them try a pill. I take Prandin. It's worked for me. I just have to remember to eat a snack or meal every 2-2 1/2 hours and at bed time or my blood sugar levels will "bottom out".
It's a lot of trial-and-error at first until you get everything regulated.
I know in a lot of cases, insulin is the drug of choice, but like Kylie said, for mild cases where the blood sugars aren't out of control, Prandin or another pill may work.
Of course, each case is different and your Dr may not be receptive to pills at all.
Good luck

My symptoms were extreme thirst and needing the loo a lot. My blood sugars were 26! I was on steroids at the time. Luckily when I came off them my blood sugars returned to normal

I used to take prandin, but it suddenly wore off...so now i have to do insulin shots. It is a lot of trial and error, but once you find out what works you feel so much better! Good Luck

Yea, the blah feels about right! When I'm high blood sugar you just want to intake more and more sugar but the more you have the worse you feel. I also get this weird sugary taste in my mouth where it's almost like it's so sugary that I can't swallow. Diabetes on top of CF really stinks, so hang in there hun!
