I am new to this site. I have a two week old nephew that is in the hospital. He had maconium ilius(sp) at birth followed by complications. they have tested him for which came back today positive. they are now running another test. Do they have false positive test? i believe it was a pku that they ran. just trying to find all information that i can about CF.

The IRT test (a test for an enzyme produced by the pancreas that is often elevated in babies that have cf) that is often done as part of the 'PKU' (newborn screen) CAN have false positives- it is a screen, not a diagnostic test. However, combined with the fact that he was born with MI, odds are very strong that he does in fact that CF. I am so sorry to hear that he experienced complications following his birth- I hope he is doing better now.

I am sure this is a very difficult time for your family and there are alot of unanswered questions. The big thing is to take it one day at a time and seek out someone else who was in your shoes a couple years ago. You can find them here or through your clinic.

Harriett was correct in her statement about MI, this is what Merck Medical Dictionary has to say:

Meconium ileus is obstruction of the terminal ileum by abnormally tenacious meconium; it almost universally occurs in neonates with cystic fibrosis.
