New flooring....carpet or tile????

Hello everyone! I just want to say thanks for all of the valuable information that you all so generously give. I have a small question that seems really unimportant but I wanted opinions from others who deal with cf on a daily basis. We recently purchased a new home and are wanting to replace the tile in a couple of rooms. I'm trying to decide if I should go with tile or carpet? I know that carpet traps in some extra allergens so I just wanted to know if any of you had any experiences where one flooring type is better than the other. Our little girl is doing really well and I don't want to make a choice that could affect her health. Thanks for the advice. God Bless!

Hi,

Tile! Tile! Tile!

You are really lucky to have the choice. If you look at other recent threads you'll see discussions on how the best thing you can do for you family is NOT to have carpet. Lots of people are ripping out the carpet in an effort to help their kids that are having a hard time with exacerbations.

Carpet holds dirt, mold, chemicals, allergens, pollen, human skin cells, dander, pet hair, and anything that you track into the house. Someone once said you wouldn't wear the same T-shirt two days in a row. Why would you want the same dirty carpet that's been walked on everyday?

New carpet has chemicals that gas off for a year. Not to mention the adhesives that they use to stick it down.

And kids like to lie on the ground. Buy some cotton area rugs you can steam clean.

The only people who think carpets are healthier are people who make and sell carpets. But there have been studies where they take carpets an analyze them and the carpets have chemicals ( I think it was like DDT) that have been banned for years.

Just one other aside, if you have the choice -- use no- odor paint. That will help keep your daughter well too.

Enjoy your new home.

put in tile/hardwood floors, and yeah put in a lot of area rugs, you can get them cleaned and it be no big deal and if they get nasty they're easy to replace, albiet not cheap but at least it isn't a huge overhaul of the house. tile is lower maintence anyway. something you can use fairly stout chemicals on if you need to, so really hardwood floors wouldn't be that great. as a side note i would suggest that you avoid lanolium (sp) there's a good reason it's so much cheaper than real tile

Another option you might want to think of is laminant. We put it in our livingroom and kitchen(yes, it was carpeted!) once DS was born. It is super easy - I am the Do-It-Yourselfer in the house and I put in the kitchen floor in about a half of a day.
<img src="http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w46/sdavis227/041.jpg">

Hope that pic worked, but it's our dining room/kitchen, and I love it. I still have to do a few things, but I think it is a much better solution that carpet and a lot cheaper (and lasts longer) than wood.

ETA: Wow that pic is huge. And yes, I LOVE our new vaccuum cleaner/mop! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
