my son had an appt with a new gi doc today. Didn't go very well. Cody has had lots of problems with rectal bleeding so we went to a new doc and now they want to do all kinds of tests. Doc says that Codys liver is enlarged and wants to do a liver panel for Cirrohsis(?) because of the liver being enlarged and the billirubin in his ua last week. He also wants to do an ultrasound, doppler, upper endoscopy, and lower endoscopy. My question is what does rectal bleeding have to do with the liver? His GI docs at the Cleveland Clinic never mentioned anything about the Cirrohsis. Cody is 12 and he is upset about everything that he has to have done, even though he will be sedated and he wants to know what Cirrohsis is. Do I tell him and give him something else to worry about(he is a constant worrier)? Or do I wait and get all the tests done first. He is also factor 5 deficient but docs don't think that is the reason for bleeding.Anyone has any thoughts please let me know. I also searched online and couldn't really coralate the bleeding with the liver.

My thoughts are to get the test results first. Then he might not be too worried at time of doing the tests.

My heart goes out to him.

best of luck <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Just a thought, maybe the bleediing has nothing to do with CF. I have a brother who had rectal bleeding, as well he was a constant worrier. He was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (ulcers in the colon causing bleeding), this is a disease that is exacerbated by stress. If he isn't already scheduled for one, maybe you should ask for a colonoscopy

My son is 12 also. He had to go through all of those tests when he was much younger. I would wait until the tests come back before you start opening that can of worms. My son has had cirrohsis for years. Sometimes there is bleeding due to a food allergy. My son is allergic to cow's milk, and if he has too much whey (milk protien) he get blood in his stool. Maybe you can try to notice if he gets wheezy if he eats certian foods. Wheat (gluten) and peanut, and milk are the most common.
I know how you feel, I sometimes wish I could go through the test for my son.

GI doc called today his liver enzymes are 4x the normal limit. So they want to start him on actigal which he was on in the nicu and then for 5 years before they stopped it. Not sure why they stopped it. He has already been tested for allergies to everything. He is only allergic to all the strong meds like cipro, levaquin, zithromax, augmentin, and many more. He is having is tests done next week. His bleeding factors are also elevated even with the additional vit. K. The whirlwind of complications never stop!
