I was the same way....I hid my CF for the most part until I got really sick. By then I realized that there were so many people just like me and they could offer answers to questions I've always wondered. PreTX there were so many I could talk to who were postTX, and their thoughts really helped me to see the "reality" of TX and not the perceived reality.

I just wanted to add that you have chest tube scars too. I had 7 tubes, and mine are still healing but I'm only 2 wks post tx. I've heard that they are very unnoticaeable after a few months as long as you let them heal right (I'm a picker!)

I actually have a brand new chest tube scar, I just got out of the hospital 2 weeks ago. My lung collapsed out of the blue, (literally I was walking out of the kitchen and BOOM can't breathe oh my god what is it NOW?!?) so they put a chest tube in, I was knocked out for six days.. crazy ordeal. But thats what brought about the serious transplant discussions, even though it was mentioned before... And I was told if anything like that happens again and they have to mess with the lung I run the risk of not being able to even get the transplant, so thats why I have to consider it now, even though I was vehemently against it since I found out I had CF.

I had a bilateral thoracotomy for my transplant which gave me two scars that run kind of around the underneath side of my shoulder blades and down under my arms to the outer edges of my breasts. I personally LOVE them and call them angel wings as well as pretty much anyone that sees them. I had 4 scars from my chest tubes as well but they are maybe 3/4 inches per scar and not really that noticeable.

I agree with the comment that once you can breathe the other stuff doesn't really bother you so much.

I'm jealous of your scars, Lindsey. WHen I was being evaluated, I asked the doc, "Can I get those cool scars that look like someone slashed me with a sword down my back?"

The doc looked horrified.

lol. You are nuts. I know what you mean though. When I was first looking into transplant I was terrified of being sliced open with the clamshell - all I could picture was me cracked open like a clam and yeah it freaked me out. When I met the first post transplant CFer at my center and he asked if I knew what the scars would look like. I said no and then he turned around and jut lifted up his shirt and I started smiling and thought okay I can handle that!

They are very obvious but I love them. When I go to the beach and I get questions I just tell the little kids that I was attacked by a shark ... the little boys are more trusting with this one for whatever reason lol.

Here is a pic of my left side - this was about a month post transplant at most ... so about 3 years ago.

The only difference between then and now is that they are not as bright they have faded somewhat and at the bottom corner of each breast they are pretty much white.

The little dots were from my staples and those are the same color as the rest of my skin now - they just have a smoothish appearance.
