My husband was offered a job yesterday and everything is sounding really good. They're in negotiations today, and they want him to sign the contract this week. Wow.

My question is when he asks today about what kind of health benefits they offer, how do you determine from that conversation if it's good coverage for me - Mrs. CF. He won't of course mention CF, but how is someone suppose to determine if what they list is good? Any certain questions to ask that will shed a light on the full scope? Since you can't mention what I would need for CF coverage....?

Any thoughts welcome, thanks.

Mind you, I don't know jack sh*t. But my two main pieces of advice would be to find the exact plan and google it...
AND, even better, contact your CF center or local CFF chapter. Tell them which plan it is, see what they say. They probably have a good deal of experience in that area.

Funny you should ask.....My husband like yours is going through
this right now. You both have every right to evaluate
medical coverage as well as other plans (disability insurance, life
insurance, retirement benefits etc,,) when offered a job.
Your expected to evaluate the whole package not just
salary. When my husband questioned the health insurance
(I insist that there be no lifetime cap and that transplant
coverage is included) the company right away sent him the computer
link to look up what the policy coverage is and answered all our
questions.
I never ask my husband how much he'll be making when he's looking
into a new job (which he has had 6 since we've been married) but I
ALWAYS ask what is the health insurance like. Good
luck with the job.

Another biggy is if there is open enrollment or is there a waiting period. I just signed up ds onto our dental insurance. He doesn't need work done, but now that he's 3 we need to start getting him regular cleanings and check ups. Got info from the insurance company that there's a 270 day waiting period for him -- signed him up last month -- won't kick in until February of next year!!!

He doesn't need any work done, but I have to pay for 8 months insurance that won't cover anything except dental emergencies. Was a little annoyed that the HR person didn't bother to let me know. She's worked for our company for over 30 years, but doesn't have a clue as to our insurance policies and can't give me a clear response as to whether or not we even HAVE open enrollment for our dental insurance. Grr! L

Sounds like a good plan. I am sure everything will work out for the both of you. I had my husbands insurance help pay for my second transplant along with my Medicare. I dropped his plan and now I just have my medicare hmo.

My husband changed jobs last year and we had to do the evaluating the insurance thing.
Anyway, once my husband was offered the job, he asked about the insurance coverage and they gave him a complete package to review. We knew what all the co-pays and deductibles were, if there were any caps, what doctors were in network, ect. We even were able check online to see what prescription drugs were in the formulary so we knew what drugs we needed a pre-authorization.
Hopefully he can get a package like this to review so you have the information in black and white.....I'm not very trusting at taking people at their word on stuff like this (hehe).

I would ask what the deductable is. What's the annual out of pocket? How much are prescription drugs? What's the name of the insurance (to see if Rao is in network or out of network). What % do you pay for hospital visits?

When my husband has applied for a job, he just specifically asks them about the plan and medication coverage and tells them I have CF. I always fear that my Pulmozyme won't be covered. He is just pretty much up front with them in telling them we need specific things covered. Usually, they give him the name of the insurance company and website to look up the information. He just recently had an interview and they called to verify that Pulmozyme would be covered (and it is). You can just ask about deductibles/out-of-pockets/med. co-pays/preferred dr. list and I would think they would give you that info without any problems. He wouldn't have to mention anything about the CF. I think most insurance companies have a website that you can go to to look up their plan coverage.

Good luck; I hope he gets it and everything works out great!
