New Mom Looking for advice

DS has been in daycare since he was 3 months old. I searched long and hard for a daycare in my area that would take infants and 3-4 months before he was born, I found a center I was comfortable with. Then "surprise" the CF diagnosis.

We thought long and hard about putting him in daycare, discussed it with his doctor and the daycare director. Major issues were keeping the babies separated from the general population -- germy toddlers, being made aware of any sick kids, bugs going around the daycare, sanitation practices... He was one of 6 babies in the baby room.

We don't have them do cpt/vest -- we do it before & after work and before bed. The only meds they give him are his enzymes.

Jess was in daycare since she was around 5 months old.
it was there that she caught her first cold which turned int pneumonia which led to the CF diagnosis.

We talked it over with the team at the CF Center and we decided to send her back to the daycare and keep a close eye on her. it's not the colds etc. you catch necessarily but how you tolerate them.

the first few colds were nervewracking for sure, but we increased PT, started ABX as necessary and she recovered.

I truly believe now she is stronger (immunologically) for the experience.

of course if she could not tolerate it or there was a problem in any way we would have taken her right out. but we were so fortunate with the teachers there who were just great.

I think that is the key. the teacher in the room at the time. wheather in a daycare center or private home. YOU need to feel comfortable with the person caring for your child and feel comfortable that they will care for them in the manner that is appropriate.

I know just what you're going through. I put my daughter in day care at 6 months. It was a small class and they were really good with her meds as long as they knew what to do. After just a couple of weeks she was hospitalized with bronchilaitis (sp?) We were told that any other kid they would have just sent home, but because of the CF they wanted to keep her. She ok after that. Although it seemed like every week my husband and I were juggling who would stay home with her. Between doc appts (she also had to get the RSV vaccine every month) and her picking up colds, pink eye, etc... it was really rough. Then two months later she was hospitalized with pnuemonia. That was it for me. As soon as she was out I asked to take leave for the rest of the school year. She has been healthy ever since... she's had little more than a runny nose in the past 7 months.
I don't mean to scare you... I think my daughter is just one of those kids who picks up everything. But I also want to let you know what you could face? Good luck!

She is learning right along with us, and has even taught the other 4 children under the age of 3 proper handwashing techniques.
Yes, he definitely gets exposed to more in the daycare setting, but he also gets exposed to everything at home, as his sister is in kindergarten and brings it all home with her.
Our CF clinic supported our decision about daycare. He did go through several respiratory infections over this past winter, but that is pretty typical for any baby here in New England.
I guess the biggest things to ask about when looking is if they are willing to stick to schedules, provide the "extra" nourishment necessary for CF children, and if they are strict with handwashing not only with themselves, but with the other children as well.
