New Port Question

Sorry, MORE port questions. This time they are post-port surgery questions. I finally got my port two weeks ago today. It was really sore for the first four days or so and then started to get better. The problem is that now when I do certain things it still hurts pretty bad. It is placed very high and I feel like when I move my arm in certain ways the port rubs against my collar bone. When I raise my left arm above my head and then move it down I feel a pop in my chest. I honestly believe my port is getting hung up on my collar bone. I hope I am crazy, this is first port so you never know! Also, when I try to lay on my stomach it pushes up and against my collar bone.

The other thing in question is the incision. The way I understood it the incision was made and the port was placed below the incision. Well my incision runs right over the drum of the port, right where the needle needs to go. Due to this, in clinic on Wednesday, the CF nurse did not want to access it because she did not want to poke through the fresh incision. So it has not been accessed yet at all, which makes me nervous. I expressed my concern about how high it is placed and that the incision runs right across it and she agreed with my concerns. She basically said that with the way the incision is, even after it heals we will always be poking through the scar, which seems goofy. She told me to call the surgeon who placed it to see if I could be seen. When I called the surgeon (Thursday), the nurse told me that he wouldn't be in until Monday so she would call me then. It kind of upset me that I was basically written off.

What to you guys think about this? Maybe I am being paranoid and if I give it time the pain/discomfort will go away! Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone else's incision run right across the port? Sorry, but I feel like I'll be heading back into the operating room. I'm hoping someone can tell me that I'm just being a nervous nelly.

Thanks so much for all your help with my questions about this port business <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I'm sorry you're not having the best of an experience with the port. Right now all that skin is probably extra tight because of how it got stitched together. I would guess that as things get more adapted and it loosens up a bit, you won't have to worry about where the scar is.

My first port placement was very close to the scar. Sometimes my mom would smear the betadine on the scar instead of the port! I had to keep reminding her which was which. Mine was really close to my collarbone too and yes, for awhile it did this weird thing where it would feel like it was catching on something. Hang tough, it's temporary (at least it was for me!)

Don't worry about it not having been accessed yet. I went a couple months in between when I got mine and when we had to use it. Right now everything just has to heal. It sounds like with the way yours is placed, you'll have better luck accessing it when you're lying down. (Are you very busty? Because that could be why the surgeon placed it so high up, so it wouldn't get lost in your boob)
