Hello and welcome! Congratulations on the birth of your precious son. You have had an emotional week!! This is a great site for advice from other moms who have gone through similar circumstances. I know how anxious you must be, but I can only imagine you are going through one of the most challenging times with your son. It only gets better from here!!

My son was also born with MI as are a lot of babies with cf. We knew ahead of time through ultrasounds, so enemas helped clear his system after 10 days. Yes, it does take a while for these babies to have a bowel movement after surgery. That is good news you have a good cf clinic nearby!

Hi Jenny,

So sorry you and your baby have to go through this. My daughter was born with a meconium ileus as well.. She had bowel surgery at 5 days old. They had tried the gatrographen enemas; which did not work..She started enzymes with her first feedings. It was an extremely stressful time for us. I hope things start moving along for your baby. Please feel free to ask any questions or just vent if you need to..

I seem to recall with DS was that they indicated they wanted him to stool by a certain time frame. They'd listen to see if he had good bowel sounds. And we CHEERED when he had his first poopy diaper. And then there were LOTS of diapers and the novelty wore off <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

He did end up having to have a couple suppositories. Apparently the pain meds he was on initially can cause slower motility. And at one point he was throwing up, and had to have a barium study to see if there might be a blockage or an issue. It turned out he was fine GI wise, but had picked up a bug and was sick from that instead.

Thank you so much for the reply. I have met alot of CF parents, but none that have gone through mi with surgery. How long was your little one in the hospital? Did it take awhile for them to pass their first bowel? They just stopped his feedings today because his belly has gotten bigger with nothing passing. They have tried to suck it out through his mouth, but aren't getting much. I am not sure where we are going from here. Hopefuly we will have more news tomorrow.
