Valerie,

WE just went to clinics yesterday and his lung function is good at 100%, but his base line is around 110%, so the docs were concerned. They suggested uping his albuterol to 4 times instead of 2 a day. They also put him on an antibiotic. This is the first "cold" in three and half years, so I panicked of course (my nature). No strep, nothing on throat culture, and lungs sound good. Docs think maybe just a cold virus, but treated him with antibiotics just in case (he has only been on antibiotics 1 time since 2005 for an ear infection). No weight gain in 3 mos, so he has to increase calories (this is always a struggle) and be seen in 3 weeks. I started him on scandi shakes again, and I am adding scandi cal powder as always to soups, puddings, cereal, etc. His digestive issues ar complicated to me anyways, he is on Miralax to keep him from obstructions in his bowls, but I think that has to affect weight gain! Since we are doing scandi shakes, Im pretty sure he will go back to loose stools as he had before with the high calorie shakes and taking Miralax. I am hoping I am overreacting, as I am prone to do, but it makes me worry when he gets any cough! He has never had pneumonia, but bronchitis happened all the time when he was younger. He seems to feel better, but still coughing. We just got a new vest (yea) and I am increasing his PFTs hoping to eliminate as much chance as possible for any bacteria to grow and cause infection. No random fevers...I take it every morning and night. Just this new fever/cold and the fever seems to have gone away.

What do your docs say about the fevers? Have you found any research about random fevers in people with CF?

I haven't come across anything yet, but I just started thinking about it when my son randomly ran a fever for two days.

As a side note, the dietary recommendations for CF are causing my son to have migraines. Any one have this problem. I'm between a rock and a hard place here.

I'm assuming that they started the abx to thwart any infection that might be brewing b/c the wouldn't do anything for a cold.

Are skandishakes better than the Boost? Thats what Noah uses to keep his wt up, and they work GREAT! That is kind of a complicated sitch w/ the digestion. I'm just glad mine only poops 1-2x a day now instead of 7-9 (thank you enzymes!)

Hope your son gets to feeling better; keep us posted, and PM me anytime.

Val,
The antibiotics were a precaution I believe? The scandishakes have about 600 calories per serving when mixed with whole milk. He takes Ultrase enzymes and the scandishakes and scandical come with a program attached to the Ultrase script. When we get a script filled, the Care First program send AquaADEKS, scandishake or scandi cal for free. He likes Boost too, but the scandishakes are more calories, so that's what were trying again. He never had a feeding tube, so I hope the shakes work like in the past. The shakes are very thick and it is alot for him to drink all at once. Sometimes I break it up into two sessions with meals. I started a blog as well if you are interested. Just trying to remain as stress free as possible with 3 kids, a demanding job, my dissertation...life you know<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
