Hi...My son david was diagnosed with cf a week after his 1st birthday after lots of infections. He is nearly 10 now. We live in Scotland and although the weather isn't great for cf he gets great care from the cf team. My main worry is....although David knows he has cf I don't think he really understands what this might mean. Like all boys he dreams of being a footbller...I try to help him to be relaistic without bombing on his dreams. Anyone have any advice about how we tell kids the prospects of cf....or do we let thm find out by default?

U don't have to tell them the doom and gloom of CF but u should be realistic and honest about CF. My son, 9 knows some people are sicker than him but also knows there are a lot of CFer that are older and doing really well. He knows the life expectancy, but to a kid that sounds old. This number keeps going up and there are several people that have way supassed this number. David could be that footballer (or is that socer) one day, whose to say what will happen with CF.

I agree with Lori, my son darin who is 9 has CF and he knows the outcome of CF and he knows some are sicker then others. He wants to play football also when he gets older (NFL he says or a dirt bike rider) and I encourage him with that. He knows as long as he does his treatments that will help kehe him healthy. Plus there's so much coming up in the future for CF new therapies!

Lori,
How are you doing? Haven't seen you on in awhile.

I know there are CFers who run marathons, play college hockey, are in triatholons, golfers... Think there are even some high school and college football (states) players.

DS right now wants to be Buzz Lightyear of Star Command when he grows up. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Can I join the - I have a boy that wants to be a basketball or football star group?? Oh this is kinda funny! My son will be 10 this saturday. All he wants to do is shoot hoops or play football. We have those inside hoops and ball - I think he will wear out my carpet. He always says he wants to go pro someday too - some days it just breaks my heart - he does have alot of talent. And he is named after Dan Marino (middle name Marino). I've often wondered the same thing - do I tell him that he might not get to do that? I chose "no" it doesn't hurt to have a dream (my brother was going to play for Dallas too-but that changed as he got older-haha) Anyway I think they have enough bad news in their lives - I'll just be happy if he can keep playing thru high school!! I just had to post after reading this - sounds too much like Tanner!

IF you tell a CFer they will never make it then chances are good they would never try. WHat happens if the life expectancy allows the time, but that CFer's drive for that goal was broken? That would be a shame. At least let them have a dream and if it becomes a reality with time, talent and luck fantastic. What does it hurt?
