If any of you take Magnesium supplements the same holds true that you should not take them within 6 hrs. of taking antibiotics because they counteract antibiotics. I just don't take my magnesium at all when I am on antibiotics.

Not exactly. An antacid simply neutralizes stomach acid, while meds like Zantac (which are actually acid/histamine-H2 blockers) prevent the body from releasing acid into the stomach in the first place.

The reason they say not to take antacid with antibiotics is because most antacids have magnesium in them. Magnesium is what makes the antibiotics ineffective.

Acid blockers like zantac and proton pump inhibitors like prevacid, nexium, and prilosec don't contain magnesium, so there is no problem taking them with antibiotics.

The doc and the pharmacist both told me proton-pump inhibitors rendered the oral antibiotics less effective and to take them apart from one another. But a little research turns up studies that found PPIs and azithromycin actually work synergistically against certain stomach bacteria and possibly against other bacteria. A little talkin'-to might be necessary.

My sister is a pharmacist. The reason not to do this is the Zithromax will harden with the calcium in your stomach. Not a good thing. Make sure you don't take anything with calcium in it 1 hour before and 2 hours after.

Oh yeah, it is okay to take Nexium, Zantac or priloxac(?) because those are acid blockers or reducers. There is no calcium in them.
