Do you have to give your newborn enzymes with each and every feeding - even if he will be feeding every 2-3 hours round the clock? I am due soon and starting to wonder about all of this. Thanks in advance for you help.

We have been giving our newborn emzymes for only two weeks. She is now 8 weeks old. We tried cutting a hole in the bottle nipple to make it bigger. She would drink the milk and all of the emzymes would be left in the nipple. We have just opened the capsule and poured them in her mouth. It seems to work best for us.Chaney Kurtz

There are baby formulas like Portagen, that are predigested and specially formulated for babies with pancreatic difficulties. Ask your CF doc, or check on the CF foundation website to see where you can get a hold of them. They work wonders, my mom had to get them for me.Debbie 22 yr old w/ CF

Yes, you must give your baby enzymes with ever feeding. Most babies feed every 4 hours though. It really becomes part of the bottle routine, just like warming the bottle. Try not to think about these things too much or the baby will sense that you may not be comfortable with it.Good luck with the delivery and congratulations on your new baby

My daughter was not diagnosed until she was 9 months, but she was on pregestimil for the first 2 months anyway, because she had some digestive problems (may have been CF related, but we do not know) between 2 and 9 months she was just on regular formula. Once she was diagnosed at 9 months,, she was on regular formula she had to have enzymes with every feeding. Some babies are pancreatic sufficient at birth. Rachel gained well and progressed along the growth curve nicely until she was 6 months old, then she was probably losing pancreatic sufficiency. They might let you try regular feeds without enzymes and then do a fecal fat test to determine if the baby is pancreatic sufficient or not.........Good luck and CONGRATS!!!!!!!Andreamom of Rachel 5 with CF and a boy on the way

Mylee was diagnosed at 6 weeks. However, since she was not yet 4lbs she ate every 2 hrs. Give the baby enzymes EVERY time she eats.Mylee started taking her enzymes at 6 weeks in applesauce from a spoon. The applesauce (we've switched to baby peaches) is acidic enough to keep the enzymes from opening too early. It acts as a protective covering (like the outside capsule). Giving it to her with her milk (instead of something acidic) causes the enzymes to open too early and not be as effective. Also the big thing is to check to make sure none of the enzymes are left in the babies mouth. Mylee was wonderful at hiding them in her mouth. So we would "sweep" the inside of her mouth with a finger or spoon. If the enzymes are left in the mouth they can cause sores. It really just became a part of life. Mylee, being so little, just adapted to taking them from a spoon and we just adapted to giving her enzymes every two hours. Good luckChristiemommy to malachi wocf and mylee wcf

However you choose to get your baby to ingest the enzymes I caution you with checking the baby's mouth, to make sure nothing is left behind. Beads sometimes can become caught between the gums and cheek or in the throat, when left behind can cause ulcers and bleeding. Very quick and easy to check with a "sweep" of the finger or maybe an extra "swig" of liquid.

Oh and Yes, you have to give enzymes every time, especially if taken out of the capsule because that negates the time release.MatsMom
