night-time coughing, athsma?, inflammation?

My seven-yr-old daughter (with cf) has had problems waking up during the night coughing since she was three. She coughs for hours every 5 seconds or so for hours. It usually occurs for 3 or 4 nights in a row about every two months or so. This past month though she has has had 3 times where she goes 4 or so nights waking up coughing. Most of the time she doesn't have problems with a day time cough.

I have been giving her this summer benadryl. This helps her sleep for a few hours but then she often wakes up again. Benadryl isn't a good solution.

Her dr doesn't seem to address the problem when I bring it up. Its like he doesn't think there are any solutions. It really interferes with her sleep as well as the rest of our families sleep. She has had a fundolication last year, so I don't think it is reflux related. I often ask for a prescription for prednisolone, which stops the night time coughing. It works wonders. So I think it must be inflammation/asthma related, right? But being on prednisolone is not a good solution five or six times a year. There must be some other solution. She also is on flovent.

Any ideas of what could help her?

Hi Sharon,

Obviously, I'm no doctor, but it definitely sounds like asthma. My daughter, who is seven, has the exact same thing happen to her. The only time her asthma comes out is when she has drainage from a cold, or else allergy related (cats, mods, and dust mites) - we know these three for sure b/c they did an allergy test on her arm to find out what triggers she may have. She use to be on Flovent, but a couple months ago our cf dr decided that she didn't think the flovent was doing the job, so they switched her to a med that I think is somewhat new, called symbicort - and it has done wonders!!! And yes, prednisolone is what they give her when her asthma acts up (like right now) She has a cold with a lot of drainage and mucuous right now, so four days ago they prescribed her the prednisolone and it always takes care of things withing two or three doses.

I would be concerned that your doctor isn't taking the asthma component seriousl, b/c the asthma inflammation obviously makes it harder on CF lungs. Hope it helps, if you have any questions, just PM me<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Could it be allergy induced asthma episodes? Like right now is prime hayfever allergies. Or maybe dust mites in her pillows? I think that you might try zyrtec (if your doc agrees) or singulair?? Having asthma or allergies uncontrolled can only hurt her CF lungs, I wonder why her pulm doesn't see that?

I agree with the others. Have you tried elevating the head of her bed some? If the cough is related to sinus drainage, that could help a lot. I always had to change Jordan's bedding more frequently too.

You are correct about the benadryl not being the answer. It is very drying too, and it could be causing more harm than good.

I hope you get it figured out. Her body needs good rest to fight CF each day. Keep us posted.
