Sharon,

My daughter has an inflammation issue with her CF. I feel if it's affecting your daughter's sleep which inturn affects her quality of life(sleep deprivation stinks) that your doc should be addressing this issue and your concerns. My daughter had issues when she was 2 1/2 year old with nighttime coughing(she also had just started culturing MRSA at the time). We ended up getting a second opinion; which led to us aggressively treating the MRSA; she also was put on pulmicort neb 2 times a day..Around the same time, the combo of aggressive treatment and pulmicort stopped the coughing. I also have her head of bed slightly elevated; use an air purifier at night in her room.. But I think the pulmicort helped; she's been on it since..

My son does this too. Sometimes it is so bad he can't breath and we have to do what I call an emergency breathing treatment of racepinephrine. It works wonders, also sometimes before I do that treatment I will turn on the warm shower or take him in the cool night air and that also helps. He too will go 3-4 nights of the coughing- usually non stop to where he or I can't sleep. Usually after 3 nights I call the doctor and they put him on oraphred for 3-5 days and then he is all better. It usually always happens starting this time of the year- never in the summer. The cool air seems to affect him, especially the night cool air and I find that if he starts wearing a hat when the air is cooler it helps alot. He is also on pulmicort twice a day-- but still seems to have bouts with the night time coughing.

Hope this helps

My experience: Molds and mildews are more active at night. When I have trouble sleeping, I wash the bedding (ALL of the bedding, if there are stuffed animals, wash those too), look for anything that needs to be cleaned, take out the trash, etc. I used to have terrible insomnia. Making sure my sleep area is clean has made a difference. Washing throw rugs and the like can also help with a cough.

There are a few more ideas <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.healthgazelle.org/bed.shtml">Here.</a>

Inflammation is generally rooted in excess acidity. I address that by working on keeping the acidity under control. There are some remarks about that here:

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.healthgazelle.org/ph.shtml">PH Balance</a>
<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.healthgazelle.org/howto.shtml">PH Balance: How To</a>
<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.healthgazelle.org/quinineandpseudomonas.shtml">Quinine and Pseudomonas</a> This last page is mostly about quinine, so don't be mislead by the name. It's relevant to someone dealing with pseudomonas and cites research related to that, but the main thrust is how I use quinine to help keep the acidity under control.

Hope that helps.

My oldest has this and I think it is drainage from his allergies. I always tell him to lay on his side that way it isn't draining straight down his throat. This seems to help him out a lot.

I also have him put a smaller coach pillow under his regular pillow so he is kind of propped up; this also seems to help.
