nissen surgery

I am so happy to see this post! I was going to post this weekend about any advice for a nissen/g-tube for my 15 mos old daughter. She will be having her surgery on Tuesday, next week. it is coming so quick! So I am VERY interested in seeing what other posts will come up <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">)

<br />My daughter spits up/throws up frequently...in spurts. It's disgusting! I am so worried, but also know that she needs this. She is 17 pounds and losing...she was 18 pounds at the hospital in May...prob high 16's by now?

Nissen fundoplication is a surgical procedure to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatus hernia. In GERD it is usually performed when medical therapy has failed, but with paraesophageal hiatus hernia, it is the first-line procedure. The Nissen fundoplication is total (360º), but partial fundoplications known as Belsey fundoplication (270º), Dor fundoplication (anterior 180º) or Toupet fundoplication (posterior 180º) are also alternative procedures with somewhat different indications.

My daughter is 2 1/2yrs old. Her drs were suggesting it when she had her g-tube put in at 10months. At that point our Avery was throwing up a lot. It seemed to go in spurts where she would throw up for a week straight and then it would die down. Since she was so intermittent with the reflux we did a 'wait and see.' She has no issues with throwing up right now, so I am glad we didn't get the surgery.

With, all surgery there is a risk. I had heard from a few moms that their child had some difficulties. For example, painful wretching when they were sick. Also having to go in a second time for surgery bc the muscle relaxed. I do think it is a good idea for severe cases, but if you are mild case, think about it more heavily.

Hers was done by keyhole and touch wood, we have had no problems whatsoever. She is now 3 years old.

It did take Soph a long time to learn to burp but she has just about got there now.

With every operation there will always be risks. Not all fundos can be done by keyhole and your child may have to be opened up. Also, as already mentioned, the wraps can undo at any point. Another problem can be if the wrap has been done too tight. The area at the opening to the stomach can become inflammed and that area may need a dilatation to open the gap up so food can pass into the tummy.

This operation was one of the best decisions for our daughter as her reflux was so bad she developed an oral aversion because of it, and we are still dealing with the fallout now.

There is alot of adjustment involved afterwards as your child will still try to be sick but will only 'dry retch'.

The recovery was pretty quick for Sophie and she was back to normal the day after.
