Our 12 year old Mason has major sinus issues. He was always a zero cough kid up until the past year. He has this cough for no reason, his lungs are always clear and he was diagnosed about 8 months ago with allergy related asthma. He plays soccer so we were given an albuterol inhaler to give him 15-20 before doing this kind of activity. It worked great for about 4 months and then the cough came back. Since September he has been on Bactrum just as a precaution and then a oral steroid about 2 weeks after he was done with the Bactrum. We thought it was b/c of the weather changing here in Nebraska and it not knowing if it wants to be hot, cold, warm or cool and can change by the hour. We are still dealing with it and they have given him another round of 5 days of oral steroid b/c they think it might be inflammation. I guess I am at a loss, I want a solution to the problem not a band-aid for a short time. His cough has gotten better but I am frustrated and at a loss as to what we do next. I am worried that he is not only embarrassed that he coughs all of the time even when just sitting there doing nothing. He is in PE at school and he does that everyday for this mester. I sent an inhaler with him for him to take before PE but he still coughs. Any suggestions would be great.....

There are different kinds of inhalers he can try, my son (CF carrier, non CF) also has allergy related asthma/mild persistant asthma and is on Flovent 2x daily as a preventative, this keeps the inflammation down, and takes Xoponex (levoalbuterol) for acute attacks only. Did your son have allergy testing done to find out exactly what he's allergic to in order to avoid this trigger? Also during the bad seasons my son takes allergy meds to augment the asthma medicine.

It took us 2 years of chronic sinus congestion and coughing before our dr. would even consider allergy testing (and in the end it was a different doctor that ordered it)..bottles of saline we should have bought stock in and many many sleepless nights. I think my son still has "nose defensiveness" he hated the saline. Good luck!

Could it be a habit cough. My son was diagnosed a few years back by three doctors when there was no explanation of continual, bothersome, repetitive cough. I was so bothered by the cough, I contacted a doctor in NY who specialized in CF and habit coughs. He wrote an article on my son.

I really struggled with how to ask a child with CF to stop coughing. But his techniques worked.
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 10 and Jack, 8 both with CF and Grant, 2 and Paige, 1 both without CF

DS had an odd, dry throat clearing cough a few years ago that I thought was just a habit; however, after his clinic appointment he cultured a different bug than his usual, steno maltophilia. His doctor prescribed an abx based on sensitivities and the cough disappeared, as did the steno malt.

Wow I wish my child could go one day without coughing. Coughing is a very typical part of CF. My son coughs every morning for about 3-4 hours straight, more from the mucus that has built up over night. He is 15 and is old enough to describe what it feels like. He says, its starts with an urge to cough, and then pretty soon the cough causes an irritation causing him to cough more. Sure its possible it could be a "habit cough" but I am pretty sure about 80% reading these boards here will tell you that you were very lucky to go years and years without your son coughing at all. That is a good sign that he might not be plagued with recurring lung infections (usually Pseudomonas type of infections) that most CFers commonly get.

Also to the poster about how you struggle as a parent asking your child with CF to stop coughing. Don't feel guilty about it. Most parents go through this struggle. I have dealt with it for 15 years now, it use to really bother me. I felt hopeless, I felt like I wish I could take that cough away from him, I wish I could have bare the cough (which I know hurts him and his ribs and muscles) and take the pain and put it on me instead. I would say this to you, don't beat yourself up about it. It is a natural response, some may feel embarrassed. Some may feel shamed that you even feel embarrassed. Just know that its the hand you were dealt and also the hand your child was dealt. Does it suck? Yes, the hell it does. Do you have a right to feel mad? Yes, you do. But put that anger and fight it down and put it to more of a positive use.

To the original poster, how are your son's lung functions (PFT)? Are they above 70%, 80%? This is great news. To give you some hope here. My son coughs daily, its a usual thing in my house. Every morning this is his thing, its a struggle to get a 15 year old to do his treatments, its a fight every day. Of course he loses in the end lol <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> The parents always win! But on a serious note, try not to let it bother you so much. Yes it could be post nasal drainage that is irritating his airway. Yes it could be bronchial irritation from the weather. Yes it could be allergy induced asthma. Its important to not let your son feel guilty about it.

PS: Make sure the nurse at school is aware of his condition. My son is in the 10th grade now and our school nurse is completely oblivious when it comes to CF, sure she read about it, and claims that she has 1 other person in the school (which she pulled my son in her room and told him her name and told him to stay away from her) completely against HIPPA guidelines and yes I got pissed, but also I can see both sides why she told him. Hate how schools try to alienate those with CF, like its some sort of catch able disease (not talking about 2 CFers passing pseudomonas) but someone actually catching CF. The teachers baffle me too, they write us Emails saying "I am worried about your son's cough as it disturbs the rest of the class". You too might get these kinds of emails. I say, tell the teacher I am so sorry that my son's disease is disrupting your class but my son has every right to an education as anyone else - DEAL WITH IT, same as we have for 15 years. Sorry, just venting.

Hang in there, it does or can get better, my son blew a 104% on his PFTs the other week!!! YAY!!! So try not to let the coughs bother you so much is all I am saying and I said a lot. Just another CF parent venting. Thank you for the opportunity to vent, didn't mean to take over your thread.

Allansarmy-I appreciate your kind words and wisdom. Thank you. Just to clarify though, I am not anxious or upset about both of my children's CF cough. That is just goes along with the disease. Of course, I wish and pray that don't have to deal with coughing, but they do.

What I was trying to explain was that my son had a habit cough for 6 weeks when he was five years old, which is very different that your usual CF cough. A habit cough can be a result from having CF as in my son's case but not caused by CF. I think my son's habit was caused by his sinus surgery. My son's habit cough was a cough that appeared suddenly. He would cough about once every five second throughout the day for weeks on end. It did not happen when he was asleep or when swimming. It was from the throat and perhaps due to a tickle in his throat or new drainage from the sinus surgery. It was determined that his coughing was not caused by new bacteria or mucus in his lungs. His pft at the time was in the 130's. Habit coughs tend to happen to those in their teenage years the doctors' said. Thankfully it was during the summer as he would not have been able to attend school during that time. So what ended up happening was I had to ask my son every time he made that noise (cough) if he really needed to cough. I could tell the difference between the habit cough and CF cough, so I wouldn't correct him when he needed to clear mucus. It only took 3 or 4 days of correcting him before his habit cough ended and he went back to coughing about once every 30 minute.
