Norfolk, VA Clinic

Thanks for the replies!

Langley is in Hampton so we would be living on base or very near. Hmmmm, the drive to Norfolk makes me rethink going there and maybe opt for another clinic. I know there is also a clinic at Portsmouth for military only but I wanted to avoid military docs if possible but if anyone goes there and has an opinion let me know.

Sorry--for some reason even though you said Langley AFB, I was thinking Andrews--hence the information about clinics in this area.

I actually went to the clinic at MCV in Richmond during my college years and really didn't like it. There was a very elderly doctor there at first who was nice, but he retired and was replaced by a young, arrogant doctor whom I couldn't stand. Whenever possible I would schedule appointments in Norfolk while I was home from school.

However, that was 16 years ago now, and I'm sure many things have changed. It would seem hard for me to imagine that anyone could have stood that doctor, so perhaps he didn't stay long.

Would you mind sharing his name if you do remember? I just don't want Nicole to make a decision based on an arrogant doctor who might not be there anymore. I know the head hancho CF doc was replaced last year with an AWESOME doctor. (He's actually the Chair of Pediatrics as well). But as far as the other 2 CF docs who mainly see all patients, I couldn't imagine anyone describing them as arrogant, so I'm wondering if the doctor you didn't like was the one replaced last year?

You know, I was trying to remember that as well, for the same reason. I can remember what he looked like but have no recollection whatsoever of his name. When I said he probably didn't stay long, though, I was being serious. He was really terrible, and I had the impression the nurses and other staff there didn't care for him either.

We are stationed at Langley and we are very pleased with the care that we receive at Portsmouth Naval Medical. Dr. Lee is very hands-on and always available to us. He is passionate about CF. As a matter of fact, we did the Tiger-1 study with Dr. Lee almost 3 years ago. Don't judge the military docs too quickly before you visit. I was very skeptical too. Prior to our assignment here, we had always received civilian care. The PNMC CF team also does joint education days with the team at CHKD. The drive can be frustrating, but most days it only takes us about 45 mins.

If you would like more info, just PM me. Hope this helps!

***As a side note, I have met the teams at both CHKD and VCU and both are impressive too!***

Thanks again. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

It seems as though we will have quite a few options. I wonder if it would be possible to meet with each CF center and find the one that seems the best fit for us? Hmmmmm, I'll have to look into that.

Bluebell--thanks for the info on Portsmouth. We have been dealing with military docs for a while now and while I know there are good ones out there, my bad experiences have by far outweighed the good. Having said that, I am not ruling that center out yet. Do they have the whole CF team? Dr, nurse, resp, dietitian, GI, etc......?
