My daughter keeps getting a really dry nose especially at night but really all the time, then she will start sneezing and then her nose will get stuffy and then it will make her cough(she has a little cold) then she will throw up! Is there anything that I can do for her nose? Would that sailine solution work that you can squeeze up their nose? I know everyone says that it is realy dry in my house but I dont know what to do since I have heard such bad things about humidifiers!

Also, I hope that this throwing up stuff doesnt happen everytime she getts a cough!!!!! Is it typical? It drives me crazy!

Thanks <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

Ask your doctor about humidifiers. If it is really dry in your house, and you are VERY diligent about cleaning the humidifier, he/she may think it is a good idea. Do you have a humidity monitor in your house? The ideal humidity is between 30%-50% (that's what I've been told).

I think throwing up after coughing is another unfortunate part of CF. It by no means happens to me every time, but it can happen. I've also learned to control it more. How old is your daughter? She may not be old enough to know that she can supress the need to throw up. Does she have reflux? If so that can contribute to the throwing up. I usually only throw up if I have a major coughing fit. This may sound gross, but lots of time I throw up only mucus that I had swallowed while coughing. So, it isn't as unpleasant as throwing up food, though not PLEASANT LOL.

Good luck <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I agree with Colleen about the possibility of reflux. My daughter will throw up after even a slight cough when her reflux is acting up.
You might want to ask the doctor about it. Also, the sneezing and nasal stuff sounds allergy related. My daughters have allergies. Allergies to dustmites are very common, and since everyone has dustmites ( no matter how clean we try to be), you may want to buy the mattress and pillow covers that are sold by most allergy retailers.

Samantha also takes Zyrtec to prevent the itchy watery nose.

You are probably correct, most likely is because of the dry heat, and yes most humidifers are just bacteria slingers. I haven't researched it but I understand there is a better type on the market now that uses a differerent technology. You also might want to make sure that your blood pressure is and clotting factors are in check.

Yes, she does have reflux. maybe that is why she throws up so easy. She does take 2- 15 mg dissolvable prevacid tablet a day, which I heard that 1 is a usual adult dose. I dont know about allergies though. She is almost 5 months old.

Semi-random-- is Reglan (spelling?) not used for reflux anymore? When I was a baby, it was the only thing that stopped my awful reflux (my mom had to change shirts after every feeding- anything that went down came back up!). Does anyone use Reglan anymore?

Hi - A saline nose spray like "Ocean" seems to help keep the nose moist and can also help when they are congested. When our son was little, the dr. had us use Intal(sp?) in the neb and that also helped. Jo Ann

Hi everyone, I was told NO to a warm mist humidifier but YES to a cool mist one. Must be cleaned regularly. But works great for me!

Cool mist humidfiers are usually ok if they are cleaned DAILY!!!!!!!! But ak the doc to be sure. As far as throwing up when she coughs.... is she coughing hard? If so there isn't much you can do. Sometimes if I get going really hard I throw up, its just because your diaphram is working so hard.

Instead of a humidifier I have been boiling water on the stove and putting in a few drops of Tea Tree Oil. It's a natural antiseptic. We've had good results. When the girls (w/cf) are getting a stuffy nose they breath in the steam thru their nose. It seems to help.
Anyone else have any experience with this?
