Not getting enough blood out

Hello,

I am having some bloodwork done for my daughter... Not CF related, but she is on the autism spectrum as well and it is for this. My question is, they could not get enough blood today. Needed about 7 or 8 vials, and only got 1 and a half so we have to go back tomorrow. We've never had trouble with our yearly clinic visits, so this is driving me crazy that I have to take her to get stuck again. We used the numbing cream today (which she didn't flinch with at all!) but I'm wondering if that is the problem. Any tips would be great!

Thanks! Zoe

Was she well hydrated? I believe its easier to get the vein and get blood out when your veins are nice and plump because you are well hydrated. It might be worthwhile to get some extra water (or whatever she likes to drink) into her.

The numbing cream is probably part of your problem. It can cause the veins to constrict which overall makes everything more difficult. If she is able to withstand it i would try to avoid the numbing cream because its easier in the long run.

We do three things now before blood draws:
1. Drink LOTS of water to plump up the veins
2. Skip the EMLA..like the previous poster said, it can constrict the vein
3. Stay calm and take nice deep breaths. Stressing out REALLY constricts the veins!

Good luck,
