Not working, what to do?

I have taken the year off from my job as a teacher because it was just too hard. My lung function is 40ish and I am getting horrible hives and joint pain still, so the lack of working is not really helping. My question is what do you all do during the day? This is more for people without kids. I just don't know what to do with myself and get depressed because of it.
I really need to make a schedule but I have no idea what to do to fill the time. I feel so worthless now and I hate it.

My girlfriend's sister moved up here from California after our daughter's diagnosis to be closer to her and help us out but she's been getting really bored lately. She decided to start learning Japanese and she's also taking a tight rope walking class. If you have an old piano in your house maybe you could take that up or get yourself a cheap guitar. I don't really know where your interests lie or what your health permits you to do but I can think of plenty of things that would be fun from starting a salt water aquarium to joining an online gaming community like second life or world of warcraft. You say you're a teacher so maybe you'd enjoy a good novel or something like joining a book club. Once you get in a rut its really hard to get out. I don't do anything but watch tv and surf the internet all day and it sucks but its an easy routine to stick to when you're stuck at home all day.

I know how you are feeling. When I first moved in with my then fiancee, I was very bored. I had no job, all my friends around here worked and my family was over an hour away. I got a small part time job and it has totally kept me sane! You probably can't do that right now if you are already taking time off teaching. But my SIL told me about this website called "meet ups". There are tons of different categories, but the jist of it is that if you have an interest say book clubs...you can search for book clubs in your area. Or maybe a knitting group. A lot of them will meet out in public and chat and do whatever. Could you join a gym? That would also get you out of the house more often. I also used to just go to walmart and people watch...hahaha...but that lead to spending money.

Hi Sue,
I always joke that taking care of myself IS my job lol .. Between treatments 2 1/2 hrs in the morning , & 1 hr. in the evening & dr. appts. I can be pretty busy..
I do have children but they are older now so dont need me like when they were younger.. The one thing I want to add to my daily routine is exercise !! I just need to get my butt in gear I am starting a pulmonary rehab program & hope that will be the jump start I need.
I love reading , computer, tv .. I know some CFers do knitting & actually sell what they have made !
I dont know if this is doable for you but would you be able to do some tutoring for students ??
I also belong to a prayer group & love that ! If you belong to a church they are always looking for help.. also for me there is always the "resting" that my body needs , so I just chill.. I guess I have been doing this for awhile & dont have a prob w/ it..
I hope you find some things that can spark your interest.. Take care & keep us posted..

I volunteer quite a bit. You could take classes. Write, especially about how your current situations feels to you. Might be very cathartic. Tutoring? Hobbies, part-time job, mentoring, a sport (that would be good for your lungs too). Walking. Are you artistic? Crafts?

The local Boys and Girls clubs, the YMCA, YWCA or other youth organizations would love your help, even on a "show up as you can" basis.

As a teacher you have impressive skills. It is just up to you to find something you would like.

Another thing, these groups don't know you are out there, you have to contact them.

Good luck,
Bill

I would give you ideas but everyone else pretty much suggested everything I used to make keychains and bookmarks to sell and raise money for the CFF. Something productive and helping charity at the same time. I like the idea of volunteering like Sara mentioned. Actual hands on experience with helping others has a great impact.

I'm a creative person so I do lots of artsy things- scrapbook, drawing and crafts. I do some some reading and writing also. If you just want to relax I suggest crossword puzzles, word searches or Sudoku. Keep the mind running

I have thought about volunteering more. I volunteer at my school one day a week. I think I have just gotten into a funk and can't get out. I feel so worthless. I also doesn't help that I am very shy so it is hard for me to take initiative to do stuff out of my comfort box.

Thanks for the answers so far!
