Not all of us have the option of having our babies at our CF hospital. My CF clinic is over 3 hours away. I don't feel that it would have made a difference to have my baby at a CF hospital. I had him at 6:25 PM and was ready to leave the next morning (though the ped wanted baby to stay 24 hours "just because" so we compromised at 3pm). My OB wrote orders for respiratory to see me every so often and they did (this is a small community hospital) but I refused them each time. I was too busy in labor or looking at my baby There is no reason why you can't take your vest or whatever else you use for airway clearance and ask to have orders written for respiratory to see you for your nebs. You aren't going to get nurses familiar w/ CF anyway because you'll be on the L&D unit and then the postpartum unit.

This time around it will be much simpler - I'll have all my equipment at home where I'll be having the baby

Caroline, I was thinking of you the other day.

On Discovery health, they had a mom give birth in the tub in a birthing center. Everyone spoke at very low, soothing volumes. The mom was whimpering, ( not like a baby sotry when they are screaming) and than after the birth, the mom and dad were in the bed all relaxed! I now picture it like that for you!!

They also had a mom on a birthing chair... that baby came right out and the midwife literally caught the child.

I know this has nothing to do with the topic, but I thought of you Caroline!

as to what caroline said, actually they put me on the cf floor when i gave birth. and that was really nice. i wasn't happy at first, but then it was nice bc i had familiar nurses and better care. that is standard practice at my hosp for cf moms.

overall, i don't think its neccesary to be at the same hosp. if you, your cf docs, and your ob are on the same page and everyone is communicating...it should be fine.

jenny, your doc and situation sounds great!

i know for those of u traveling and hour or more it is tough, esp towards the end...but it will all be worth it.

like caroline says, and everyone else..i think its more important (provided your cf is stable here) to get the birth you want and deserve. a water birth sounds awesome! i had a natural birth too but was fortunate to find an OB and a cf doc that complied w my wishes.
regardless of what they are-i just hope that all cf moms get the birth (not just 'birth' but the whole epxerience of labor and pregnancy) that they want. you shouldn't have to compromise on everything bc u have cf. don't let yourself be labeled if you have faith that u and baby are fine...you are strong enough to have pregnancy and birth they way you want it!

Kristy - LOL those natural birth stories can be pretty empowering. And it is amazing how calm some women can be when they are confident in what their bodies are doing and are educated about the process. I think if you are not sure what is going on it is easy to lose control and freak out. I know because it happened to me during my induction w/ my son.

Igotalife - I am surprised they put on the CF floor but at the same time, I guess post partum care is pretty simple so any nurse could do it. And I totally agree w/ the rest of what you said.
