Omaha... anyone?

Many of you are aware of my son's short gut issues after the last three surgeries. Well, he's still unable to take feedings- and we did an upper GI today that showed a portion of the small intestine (still injured from surgery) is peristalsing backwards, while the rest is working normal. We are now going to the Children's Hospital and Medical Center of Omaha for a consult to see A) if the bowel needs to be resected B) for evaluation for intestinal transplant and C) if he needs resection, we will stay for surgery and subsequent recovery.

Does/has anyone been to this hospital? What is it like? How are facilities? Is staff parent-friendly? Where do you suggest staying for out-of-towners?

Hi, I can't offer too much on the children's hospital because my girls went to UNMC for CF care except for twice. Anna was admitted to the children's hospital when there were no beds at UNMC and the clinics were merging or something like that. Anyway... it wasn't bad. Nice hospital and everyone seemed really nice. It's been a while and Anna was in high school and had an attitude about having to be in and almost missing Model UN. Most children's hospitals are really good though, at least all the ones we've ever been to. (and we've been to quite a few)

As for Omaha and places to stay. You should ask them about the Ronald McDonald house. Talk to the social worker about it. Definantely would be worth it if you are going to be there a few days. There are quite a few hotels in the area to chose from though. If you aren't too familiar with Omaha, there is a mall just up the road (west) from the hospital off Dodge towards 680. Practically across the street from the children's hospital on Dodge is a great pizza place called Zio's. They serve by the slice or pan. With all the improvements they've made on the area of 72nd and Dodge (72nd & Pacific specifically which is one major intersection south of Dodge) there are plenty of places to eat and a Target and Wal~Mart close by as well as a HyVee right behind the shopping center where Zio's pizza is.

I hope all goes well with your son. Please ask about the RM house though. I don't know where it is in relation to the children's hospital but they are usually pretty darn close.

I spent the entire week at the hospital with him. Only one parent could spend the night with him. I slept in his room and everything. Sleeping wasn't the greatest but at least I didn't have to leave him. Later the same month he had brain surgery and spent a night in PICU-both my husband and I spent the night in the room with him that time. Dr. Columbo did come over from the med center to do rounds, but he was also seen by the docs at Childrens. I had a very good experience while there. They kept me in the loop of everything that was going on. When he was having surgery they were good about keeping us updated on everything that was going on.
As far as a place to stay-you could check into the Rainbow House. It is a free will donation. I have never stayed there but have had family. The number for that is 402-354-5644.
Children's is right off of Dodge so there is a lot around as far as the things you will need for your stay.
