On Bactrim for Nocardia

<P>My daughter (13) has been on Bactrim since she cultured Nocardia about 5 months ago. The bactrim seems to be getting rid of her symptoms but the problem we are having is she is getting sick about 3-4 nights a week. She is vomiting at about midnight -1 AM. We were told to make sure she is eating before and after she takes the antibiotic to help her stomach since she is on such a high dose. Well she is eating when she takes them but this is not helping. Has anyone ever been on long term high dose oral antibiotics and had this problem and if so what has helped? She has months to go on these antibiotics but she can NOT  keep on with this vomiting all the time at night. Perhaps there is something else going on from the antibiotics...? I don't know. She is also eating yogurt and taking acidophilus 2 times a day. I am going to be calling our center on Monday but was hoping for some insight on this if anyone has some. I did mention this to our center a month ago and they said that she can not be taken off the antibiotic yet.....</P>

Yes we have been on long term Bactrim, high dose for Nocardia. Fortunately we did not have problems with vomiting. It sounds like you are doing all I can think of already with the yogurt and acidophilus. I hope you can get some help?

I just started Bactrim and will be on it long term as well, I don't know if it is the Bactrim or the other two orals or the IV's but I am incredibly nauseous as well. I find salty foods are helping the best, I also have Zofran for when it is really bad.

DS has been on it long term for a few years and hasn't had issues. Twice a day -- he gets one in the morning and one afterschool.

I just started Sulfameth (I think it's the same as Bactrim) for my Nocardia that I've had for for-freaking-ever. I always thought I had a Sulfa allergy my entire life, got that tested, whatdayaknow? Not allergic! When I first cultured Nocardia I was on Minocycline for 2 years, then just stopped because we figured it went away. The issue with Nocardia is that it's basically a b**ch to kill and takes FOREVER.

Anyways, perhaps you could try switching meds? Though Minocycline knocked my out for days when I started.... like, bed-bound, I'm-can't-walk-I'm-going-to-puke. Bright side? No acne <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

<P><STRONG>Bactrim is in the sulfa drug family, which, I can not take for (2) reasons.  The first reason is because it makes it hard to breath, and I feel like I am having bronchospasms.  The other reason is I get sick on my stomach because the medicine is very harsh.  You may want to run this by the doctor, and don't let him give you the "run around".  If your daughter is having a hard time breathing while taking this meds, then the doctor should switch her to another med similiar to Bactrim, BUT, without those (2) side effects.</STRONG></P>
