Oral ABX

Since October 16th of this year, I've been on two week courses of Levaquinn THREE times. I just got off of Levaquinn for the third time the beginning of last week and I'm sick again. I'm up all night coughing and my throat has also been sore. I think I may have run a fever a couple of times. I go back to the doc next Friday and I'm not sure what I should do. I'm 20 years old and have NEVER been in the hospital or on IV's. My FEV1 two years ago was in the 90s and now I can't get it above 70%. I don't want to be in the hospital and my doctor doesn't seem to want to put me in. She said something about doing the oral abx for longer than two weeks. I guess I'm just wondering if I should try that or go ahead and try to do IVs. Levaquinn always makes me feel better, but it doesn't last long.

IMHO the orals arent enough for you. Your decrease in your PFT indicates there is something major happening & you dont want it to remain permanent.

I learned the hard way that never being in the hospital or being iv free is always a GREAT thing.

Don't worry. Having oral abx not work is really not a big deal. Many doctors give cf patients IV abx a couple times a year with much higher pft's than yours.

IV abx are not bad. You will need a picc line in your arm but its not a big deal. You can also do the abx at home. You may need to be in the hospital for the first time for a day or so, just because they need to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction to the abx. IV abx are great though and they work really well. Please don't worry about getting them. If I had gotten them much sooner I think I would be much better off today. Doctor didn't prescribe them for me until my pft's were in the 30's.
