oral antibiotic resistence?

Heather,

I don't think she has become resistant yet, but the doctor just does not want to keep loading her up on antibiotics, if she just has a virus and can it just needs to run it's course. Doctors are not treating most ear infections with antibiotics anymore unless they don't clear on their own.

There are times when IV are needed, but they should be juggled with risks that can come with them. They are hard on the kidneys can cause hearing loss, secondary infections.

Has she ever had a Broch to see what her lungs look like or if they are culturing anything that is not showing on a throat swab?

She had a bronch last year and only grew out staph in low numbers. Her lungs looked very good (they said "no lung involvement").

That's good, then I would possibly stay conservative on treatment. How about her sinuses, could the cough be caused by post nasal drip, has she had a cat scan of her sinuses. I will say, my son's sinuses were a huge prob. Culuturing only staph, and after 3 surgeries in 14months, we finally did do IVs to knock things down and try and keep them clear

My daughter Hayley is 5 tomorrow and she has been on IV antibiotics at least 8 times already. The oral antibiotics just don't seem to do much for her, they never have. But we still always try them first. We us antibiotics a lot and for me it is all about preserving lung function. As another poster mentioned the Denmark treatment is IV anti's every 3 months whether they are sick or not and they are living a lot longer. She has only cultred PA twice. One in July of 2006 and the other in September of 2008. We did a bronch last February and it did not show anything! I firmly believe that throat cultures are totally unreliable but with young kids it is all we have. I also believe that they cannot get every nook and cranny of the lungs with a bronch, so there could be something in a lower lobe, ect. like PA that they do not get.

So we treat her symptoms. THe orals like I said usually do not work. When we do IV's we do Tobramycin and Fortaz and she always improves quickly. Which tells me and her doctor that she does have PA in her lungs somewhere, it just does not always show up in the cultures.

I do worry a little about antibiotic resistance, but I am more worried about preserving her lung function. Once you lose lung function and have permanent lung damage you cannot reverse it.

Just my 2 cents!
